Might have well have asked how much money people make.

If you're doing it for exercise, run 2 miles without killing yourself, and you've got your benchmark. Try to keep beating that.

Running is mentally one of the hardest sports. You push yourself to the extreme. Almost all people just stop running at some point, but legit runners will push until they drop if need be.

Once you figure out how to run (pace, steps, timing, breathing, etc), it gets much easier and you can step up the pace

I haven't run in a few months. short and fat body type. could probably go all out and collapse at the finish line of 1 mile in about 7 mins. that would be with a warm up first and a couple of cigarettes

i won a bet with myself that i'd see you post in this thread.

anything less than a 10min mile average is decent, in my opinion. it all depends on your diet, weight, height, stride, gait, etc.

I did grow up running both track and XC, so I have it figured out. What it comes down to is some people are just natural athletes and some are not.

I never said an average person should be able to run that, but an average person should be able to run at least 10 minute miles unless they are old or fat

I'm a lot more apt to believe that than anyone saying he could a good distance, at speed, for any length of time.

A mile is not that far, if you've run at all.

I agree

and a "reasonably healthy" male should be able to run 1 8 minute mile IMO

that is a decent jog, its not even running

Punish yourself by running a 7:30 mile after eating a big meal and chugging a beer. The regular running will come easy after that.

1 mile race is different than just running a mile. I would literally make myself sprint as hard as I could and If I collapse and have to go to the hospital so be it….but should be able to light up a 7 minute mile.

It obviously doesn't appeal to everyone but there is nothing boring to me about running at 95% of my max HR trying to catch the guy in front of me and not let the guy behind me catch me.

The battle lies within when you're racing. You have to fight the demons that say it's okay to slow down a little. The internal struggle that says you didn't train your best and you would be okay with a 4th place age group finish rather than 3rd.

You find out alot about yourself through training and racing. When it's just you, doing something you love and not getting paid and your results are a direct correlation to the training you put in and how much do you want it. Everyone has a reason to not succeed and there all valid to a degree, but the excitement comes when you push beyond those reasons and achieve something truly remarkable.

I ran 7 miles this morning at an 8:00 pace. But it was 25 degrees, dark (4:45 am) and slippery as hell from icy roads.

In any case, if you're in ok shape, 8 minute mile is doable. Dont listen to all of the sub 6 min pace folks here.
