My wife and I took in a German Shepherd about a year ago from someone who was moving and couldn't take the dog with them. After we got her, we found out she had an incontinence problem. Our vet put her on meds to help, and it did somewhat. We eventually put a diaper on her to help stop her from having accidents in the house. However, this morning when my wife woke up, her diaper had fallen off and she had an accident. My wife is furious and has had enough of the dog. She wants to get rid of the dog. I feel bad because we have been trying to rehome her, but we haven't been able to find a home. I have tried contacting Shepherd rescue organizations in the past, but none have responded. My wife wants me to take her to the animal shelter. I am reluctant because I think that it will turn into her being euthanized. This has been a hot button issue for my wife and I, and I am kind of out of options. Should I just bring the dog to the shelter and take the "Happy Wife" approach?

Get rid of the wife. The dog's loyalty will never be in question.

Your wife sounds like a cat person. Ditch the bitch, keep the dog.

Well, it sounds like it's time to put the old bitch out of her misery...

You can now get a younger and more enthusiastic companion. I say be open to all colors and sizes.

If you bring the dog to a shelter, you're basically having it killed over a medical issue it can't control. Don't do that.

Why can't it be an outside dog?

Also, your wife is a bitch. Divorce her before you decide to have kids.

Prepare your anus.

Dog love and people hate is strong in the OT. I believe my similar thread got the most down votes I've ver gotten. It took about 8 pages before I got legit info that was helpful, and not "frick you" "die".

I'd try to kennel train the dog. Even if an older dog. Over time you will train her bladder and her that when outside, it is time to pee. Dogs USUALLY won't piss where they lay.

Shepherds need jobs too. They'll need to be walked. Maybe with a weight pack.

End of the day. If it is making life truly miserable get rid of the dog. Try to find "no kill shelters" and rescues. These places are full usually so it will take some time. Some better shelters have weekend programs where you can leave the dog over the weekend, and if it gets adopted, great. If not you pick up the dog and try again next week.

She's really that mad that the dog peed on the floor? Tell her to calm down.

Is this dog pissing when she sees you? Out of fear or excitement? Not saying you beat her, but if every time you see her she peed out of excitement, you get mad, she gets nervous and pees more. It's a vicious cycle.

Our big idiot is notorious for it. Anybody new comes to the house gets a speech about how to talk to her. The minute she hears excitement from a new voice? It's a golden shower for all involved. And she wags her tail in it slinging it everywhere.

Just have to start walking up to her emotionless. And take her outside. She pisses, then reward her. A high pitched "who's a good girl" first thing in the AM will get my knucklehead pissing and she is near perfect for pissing outside. It may never change.

I love dogs. I really do. But they are not humans. If your wife can't tolerate a dog that pisses in the house constantly, and there is no alternative, then you need to get rid of the dog. And yes, it's possible that the dog will be euthanized. That is part of the hard realities of life.

We have a female dog with the same problem. She does everything to let us know but still has accidents. We let her out often to try to minimize the problem. We also limit her to the kitchen while we're away and put towels on the floor. She pees on the towels if she can't hold it and the tile floors are easy to clean up and disinfect.

It isn't optimal but she's a fantastic dog and I can't put her down for this issue. She was also diagnosed with cancer 6 months ago so our goal is to let her have all of the good days she can.

I agree in general, and I own 2 dogs. But I don't see why it would be so hard to find a no kill shelter? Granted, I have no experience with that.

Sorry for the trouble you are having. Shepherds are great dogs. The diaper falling off, is that a normal occurrence? If not, this seems like a one time incident.

What about the dog being an outside dog with shelter?

Post the dog as a giveaway to someone with a huge yard or living out in a rural area where it can have fun. It will be happier and can range and pee/poop anywhere. You will both be much better off and your relationship with the he wife will be mo bettuh.

Find someone with a farm or lots of acreage.

How old is the dog? Is she an inside dog? Does she urinate or defacate when she gets overly excited? Did your vet diagnose it as submissive peeing / defacation? If she is an inside dog, how long do you keep food and/or water out?

Have you tried the medication "Proin?"
