I believe the original idea was, as someone else stated in the thread, was $25 and ice, or $100. Either way you're donating.

Gotcha... it may have been just a certain charity I had heard about.

Some could argue it's been one of the most successful charity drives ever. No celebrities were paid, no advertising dollars needed, just pure, grassroots, free awareness that has turned into actual funding. I thought it was silly at the beginning, but it's actually pretty remarkable, and an extremely positive use of social media.

I agree. I despise the attention whorish aspect of it. However, if the numbers are accurate, and it is raising additional money, I suppose it's not a bad thing.

60 Minutes reported that the whole thing sprang from social media posts planted by the marketing department at C-C-Cold Ice Co. Its stock is up 14%.

The original point has changed a lot but it doesn't really matter. Donations and awareness are at an all time high.

Here's my thing. Attention whores are going to attention whore regardless... why not get some money out of it for a good purpose? What's the harm in that?

Both donations and awareness are up, which was the point to begin with. I don't see anything wrong with it.

People like to feel part of something. Social media is used to either inflate egos, disguise our insecurities, or just genuinely express our thoughts. I don't care why you do it

that's probably part of it. However the chain is what has the awareness at an all time high. 1 person is challenged, then he/she nominates 3 other attention whores. Or in some cases, more than 3.

Although it would be more altruistic to donate without recognition, the most important thing for people suffering from ALS is that people actually donate. Arguing that people should donate without provocation may sound nice, but it is not actually helping anyone at all. This marketing campaign has raised actual money and awareness for an organization that was struggling with both. There is always the question of how long or how well an initiative will last, but I'm pretty sure the organization is thrilled to get funding that actually helps people. Just my two cents.

I see a lot of celebs doing the ice bucket challenge...I would assume they are making some nice donations with it.

That's who started it I believe, all I saw on twitter about a week - 2 seeks ago were high profile athletes doing it, then it spread to a bunch of teammates, coaches, fans, all being called out and now everyone is doing it.

I completely disagree with you. The best thing is to raise money and awareness, which is what this is doing.

Plus some of you are acting like people are bragging about how much money they donated. That isn't happening. They are simply taking part in the whole challenge, whether donating or not, and spreading it on to more people.

The celebs doing it is actually raising awareness and kind of cool. The other Facebook schmucks doing it for attention are contributing nothing.

It's been going on much longer than that.
