Ice Bucket Challenge

Do people not realize that by dumping a bucket of ice water on yourself, you're technically off the hook for a donation?
I'd much rather actually donate to the ALS Association rather than pour a bucket of water on myself. Just pouring a bucket of water on yourself does nothing for the ALS community.
Yeah, you might be creating temporary awareness about the illness, but down the road in a few weeks it will be forgotten. The families who have seen family members fight the battle with ALS as well as those who have lost friends and family to the illness will continue to live and deal with this everyday.
Thoughts?
ETA: I understand that this "challenge" has upped donations significantly, but people should be donating anyway without being challenged in my opinion.

I know I'm in the minority here, but just make the donation to ALS research without the stupid public ice drop. The best donations are the unannounced ones.
That and it doesn't seem genuine to tell the world, "look how great of a person I am for donating to charity, and I want everyone to know it!"

Well, they've quadrupled their intake year over year, must be doing something.
I think people donate anyway

Most people are doing the challenge AND donating
donations are up 1000% for ALS research because of this
In short, you are wrong in thinking it isn't doing anything to actually help

quote:You don't think this shite has worked? Look at the numbers... without the ice bucket part, this doesn't happen and all that money doesn't go in. That's the reality of it.
Yeah, you might be creating temporary awareness about the illness,
You're in a dream world if you think people just saying they donated money causes other people to donate. It has become a fad. Also, I think it's $25 + ice water or $100.

that isn't the point

Yeah, seems kind of counterproductive. Just give the money, and then douse yourself if you want to be a part of it.

I'm just glad no one has asked me to do it yet. I don't want to catch a cold. I would refuse.

It's for awareness, and some of those that get ice water also donate.
You go tell me how much ALS research has been given since this all has happened. Get the word to the public and it's up to them to decide if want to donate, and this is an excellent way to get people aware.

bunch of sticks in the mud around here
It's fun and most people who are doing it are donating as well. Chill out.
ETA: No pun intended.

And I get that.
I'm trying to convey that we as a community shouldn't have to have a challenge put into the mix to max out donations. It's for a great cause. People should be donating without being challenged.

I believe those doing the challenge are donating as well, hence the giant leap in donations.

Is this another stupid Facebook thing?
The fire thing sounded more interesting.

Most people I've see do it are donating and continuing the awareness by challenging friends, who turned around and donate and continue the cycle.
It's working. It's permeated into the wealthy philanthropic community, which has added even more charitable dollars to ALS research.

Yeah, you're wrong here. This has encouraged a lot more people to donate.

but you're not
either way, I'm torn. It is bringing awareness to ALS while at the same time giving douchebags something to brag about how good of a person they are

If you used a yeti as your "ice bucket" would the sub zero temperature of the water kill you?
Posted on 8/17/14 at 6:49 pm to Slinky
And if everyone donated what they "should," in your opinion, to all causes, we'd all be out of money.
