You know the details.. Mid 80s belt driven Maytag washer with the old school transmission with the counterweight.

The pulley dies not move during the agitator cycle and the belt starts to burn. When it spins there's no problem.

I can rotate the pulley by hand easily in one direction and it's very hard to rotate in the other.

Symptom is no agitation and the belt is burning and smoking.

As I understand it, the way this unit works is the polarity reverses on the motor and rotates the pulley one direction to engage the brake and move tub and agitator together for spin cycle and the opposite direction is supposed to move the agitator only.

Took out the set screw and removed the agitator to make sure nothing was caught underneath that was causing the issue.

I see there is no servicing possible for that transmission so I'm likely going to toss this unit if that's the issue but I wanted your thoughts on it first.

I used it last night by simply advancing it past the the agitation cycle so I know pump and everything else is fine. I'm going to cry if I have to dump it.

Eta here's what it looks like under the agitator. Can I possible grease or lube this in any way? Anything else I can try?

It's toast. Not worth the $$$ to fix. Had the same issue a few years ago

With the belt off, you should be able to rotate the pulley in either direction. If you have someone to help on the other side (top-side), they should see the agitator move if you are turning the pulley counterclockwise, and the drum should spin when turning it clockwise. Based on your post, I am assuming you cannot turn the pulley counterclockwise. If this is the case, the transmission is shot.

You are going to be stunned with the sorcery in washers/dryers nowadays.

Some of them even interface with your iPhone.

Washer+dryer that last 20 years > washer that send notifications to a phone.

no I can. It's just very hard going counter clockwise and the drum and agitator both move regardless of which direction I move the pulley

By the looks of it... you should be able to rob some parts from your bush hog and get that baby back in service!

Yeah, the agitator should spin both ways. I meant (should have said) you could not turn it counterclockwise easily. I would say you have a bad transmission.

Yep. It's very very hard to turn counterclockwise by hand.

Damn. Ok I guess I'm hitting Craigslist.

Sounds bad. Should have got a direct drive whirlpool.
The Maytag trans are a pain to swap out. But if you really love the unit you can get them used cheap.
