My .45 wouldn't have been my first option, but it was in my bedside table. Shotgun would have come after the 5.56 rounds that are in my gun safe. My ar has the stopping power and distance, but, all guns are locked up besides my pistol.

I have only had one "fight or flight" moment since moving into my house 4 years ago. My wife was asleep in bed next to me and I was just dozing off.

I heard a crash that sounded like someone knocking something over in the living room. Well, "fight" kicked in. I literally flew over my pregnant wife, grabbed the Glock out of the drawer, and proceeded to clear every room and closet in the house.

We ended up deciding that it was one of those suction cup razors had fallen off the wall in the shower. We promptly got rid of that thing.

Oh, and the .45 was a great choice as well.

No you didn't.

If you're shooting someone at 40 yards, you better hope you have a damn good lawyer.

Even if someone was trying to break into his house but was still outside, once OP goes outside, he is likely to encounter the intruder within 10 yards or the guy is likely to run when the door opens and lights go on. I can't envision a home defense scenario where you are shooting someone at 40 yards.

Anyone ever have someone try and break in with 2 cars in the driveway before? Gotta take some balls knowing someone has to be home.
Maybe NSA?

A German Shepherd can be a great deterrent for criminals, Jehovah Witnesses and door to door salesmen. I have a German Shepherd and a Chow Chow that I am watching while my parents do some remodeling, you wont get withing 20 feet of the door before they will let me know that someone is there.

One of those feasted on a stray I have. Was lucky to get out alive. Two massive puncture holes in his butt.

Really? You scare the shite out of someone on your porch and he takes off but is high on meth and turns around and runs towards you because, well he's high on meth. Youre going to wait until you see the whites in his eyes? Are you not threatened and in imminent danger?

Highly unlikely that someone was trying to break into your house with you being home. Burglars do not want to be caught or shot and mostly operate around 9 am to 11 am.

Someone broke into my car in my driveway about 7/8 years ago. It's a long story involving video tape, credit cards, stolen cell phones and Jack In The Box, but long story short it was a 19 year old from NOLA with 2 murder warrants. The cop said, "thank God you didn't go out on your driveway".
