If they were dumb enough to want to stay on the coast during a Katrina-type storm, you mighta oughta let 'em.

FWIW, I remember hearing about people during Camille.

You can't be forced to do anything.

Mandatory only means that you likely will not receive any emergency response during the initial occurrence of the storm.

100% correct.

Just means you are on your own. If you get in trouble no one is coming to help.

What's your plan in the event of a house fire? Just have to consider every possible emergency.

We can't force them to leave their homes so we strongly recommended it. I don't have anything in my house worth losing my family over.

We live in a supposed flood zone. The police went up and down our street urging us to leave before Katrina hit. We stayed and watched huge oaks and pines fall all around us. We were in southern Ponchatoula. Katrina hit with a ton of force. But honestly, we didn't suffer a direct hit. Staying was kinda stupid. But houses were broken into all around me the very next night. People get hungry fast when the lights are out and the roads are impassable. If we would have had a direct hit, there wouldn't have had anything to stay home and protect. Anything under a cat 4 and a sure direct hit would not make me leave.

What do you think about the government deal? Can they come by and force you to go? I've heard different things on this.

There are often broad laws in place to give extraordinary power to local govts in emergency situations. And regardless, sometimes in such situations they do whatever they want anyway. So I don't know if they can legally or if it even makes a difference what the law says when it comes down to it.

This article is pretty helpful.

I thought that if you signed off on a waiver stating that you were aware of the risks that they couldn't force your leave.

The center of the town is near a river and is thus low-lying

aren't areas around a river considerably higher than areas further away due to sediment from the over flow and what not?
