This is my first real hurricane season living here (rode out Gustav as a freshmen)

How bad do they get here?

It'll be hard to beat Gustav as far as damage in Baton Rouge. But as a college freshman you probably didn't give a frick as long as you had booze and friends, much like myself in 92 for Andrew.

So this storm even being compared to Gustav by the 'experts' should have everyone's attention.

How much time do they need? Seems like you don’t really know if a mandatory evacuation is needed until now. At which point contraflow would come into play. Contraflow isn’t needed until you need a mandatory evacuation. The frick is he saying????

THIS

Even if you don't have time for mandatory evac, why wouldn't you implement CONTRAFLOW anyway?
There's going to be a shite-ton of people leaving tomorrow regardless. I can't imagine how bad traffic will be without CONTRAFLOW...
Is it too tough on resources/law enforcement?
What Am I missing?

The areas that are not on the inside of the levee system. It’s not hard if you try a little bit.

Trying to decide if it would be best for my wife and son to head toward Houston today or tomorrow am early. With the thinking being most would opt for today, meaning lighter traffic tomorrow.

Supposedly it will be pretty windy late tonight/early morning.

I was thinking about leaving at 7-8 pm today and hoping that would be less trafficy.

Tomorrow will be too late imo.. This storm is about to blow up and people will freak out. I would leave today and go North and/or West asap.. I hope I am wrong, but this one is going to be really bad imo.

As long as you can get into a safe structure anywhere about 40+ miles from the shore, you should be fine. I live in S Houston and always book a hotel on the North side of town when a storm is threatening. 95% of the time I get to cancel the reservation. Food for thought in the future.

I pray for the people of South / Southeast Louisiana. Heavenly Father I plead you will send angels to guide and protect them from harm, Amen.

Nothing. They could easily start contraflow at 1 am when there's no traffic on the road.

They just block the onramps for the inbound part of the interstate. Then they drive through and make sure it's clear. Then they let everyone on going the wrong way.

At some point far enough out, the Landmass blocks the interstate so the evacuees have to either cross over or exit and get back on in the normal direction.

A lot of moving parts but not exactly difficult to implement.

Definitely today. The heavy winds start to hit early tomorrow and you don't want to get caught out in that mess.

I think it’s supposed to be pretty windy through like Monday or so.

That’s kinda what everyone has been talking about lately.

How long were schools closed in BR after Gustav? Just wondering what to possibly expect next week.

At least a week, as I recall.

I'd expect the same, especially with Labor Day the following Monday.

I got an email from my brother who lives in Terrytown. They were going to leave for North Texas where his wife's sister lives. He changed his mind and they are going to stay and ride it out. He said the traffic is bumper to bumper and gas can't be found.

How bad do they get here?
----Don't you think that depends on windspeed, rain and spin-off tornadoes in BR?

Don’t you think those things depend on geography?

3 people downvoted this. 3 people downvoted a prayer to protect people.

Left Belle Chasse around 6 made it to our camp in Butler, Al around 10. Smooth sailing from Belle Chasse till a mile from the 59 north exit, slowed a little then good after that. Thank god we didn’t have to stay on i10. Looking like we made the right decision leaving when we did. Lost everything we had for Katrina, when we lived in Empire, this has the same feeling..
