The interviews were good and they had lots of great short stories. A bunch of big name authors were published in Playboy before they made it big.

Live to age 91 with 2/3rds of your life surrounded by some of the hottest women in the world and more money than you could ever need. Frankly, there are worse ways to live a life

Hugh did more to end censorship than most people realize.
And was a civil rights force.
Yeah, and people are celebrating this. Forget what you will about him being the most notorious womanizer of all time; he was also one of the biggest free speech advocates and revolutionized the media in a positive way outside of Playboy.
The man lived the ultimate American Dream and furthered it for society as a whole.

If it weren't for women and alcohol I would be OT rich. He effectively created a free media. HBO and many other free speech platforms would not exist at least in their current forms if it were not for Hefner. He was the one who busted down the gate for every politically incorrect act to follow.

I hope he died as he lived - with a boner.
Fwiw- he was incredibly important in the cultural sexual revolution sense in my childhood - one of the most influential voices in the culture. I grew up amidst that whole thing-crazy when I think about how early I acted all that stuff out way before I was ready .- Playboy certainly normalized the joy of sex, but it never grappled with the negative consequences- moral relativism, the effects of hedonism on personal development, AIDS, sexualization of young girls, stds, divorce etc. His legacy will be mixed .

Maybe inappropriate for the time, but here's a Gilbert Gottfried joke at his Roast, which was the greatest Roast performance of all time.
"The only way Hugh Hefner can get stiff is through rigor mortis. He doesn't need Viagra, he needs cement."

It's possible to be a fan of both. And Penthouse too for that matter.
