I had the same in my family. She spoke only French and we were her only family. We buried her in our family plot.

The old lady practicing or being a Traiteur sounds about right. There are some very old Cajun and creole people who still do this.

did she have tiny little sachel things safety pinned on her nightgown and clothes and brown scapulars and say the rosary at 7PM with the radio every night?

Not really shocking. There are many posts in this thread about traditional male things in regard to the OP. Climbing trees, riding horses, stitches, broken bones, fart cupping, and dicks falling off.

I do not know the OP. Pics?

I am female - and to clear things up, the posts about fart cupping and dicks were not made by me...

Guys - a word of warning... do yourself a favor and stay far away from any type of voodoo, black magic, soothsayers, diviners, tarot cards, ouija boards and other things of the like. I am not saying all of them are real, but there is real 'power' behind some of those things and some people associated with them. Bad things tend to ultimately happen to those associated with 'that' power, as it comes from somewhere other than God.

To the OP, I highly recommend you not touch any of those things and find a way to get them out of your house and have them properly destroyed.

This is true. I have personally had very negative (unsolicited) occult experiences. OP needs to find a person who is an actual practicing, knowledgable Christian (1/8 of professed). Get rid of all relics. I would do these things ASAP. Good luck and God bless.

Bitches can't ride horses or climb trees? What the frick. I thought this was America.

It's my God given right to climb trees, and ride horses, and fart (but I don't do that because I'm a lady), and drive poorly. And you can't tell me otherwise.

None of them are real. Those people who hold themselves out as having some supernatural power only hold the power to separate fools from their money.

ok-ok....your instincts are correct [ spooked ], my guess is to build a fire and burn the stuff.
since there is no known spell goin on here.

if you are hesitant to do that on your own....then just stop in at a voodoo shop and come right out and ask details about getting rid of voodoo trinkets.

I'm glad that's all it was......

You do realize that the people who work at voodoo shops don't know a thing about it, correct? They were probably a waiter at their prior job.

Sounds like your old grandmothers maid may have been a Traiteur? In south La in the Cajun/Creole old days, there were people who practiced the old fashion medicine healings with herbs, roots, etc

maybe.....but I read Traiteur was faith healing per laying on of hands....not tying satchels around necks

Call on the Universe and your Higher, Sacred Self. Speak your Intention to cleanse your soul of any dark spirit or pain body that may have attached to you during the opening of that box. Burn some incense. You are the Almighty Governing spirit that creates and controls your life and essence. Purify me now and know that the light of Christ Consciousness is the true and only Reality of life. I commend my Grandmother's spirit to your eternal safekeeping. Release me from this spirit of Darkness and resolve me to do only good in the remainder of my Soul Journey on this Earthly Plane. In Jesus name, Amen. You will be good from here on out, my friend.

Seriously, anyone have suggestions? Also I need a home remedy - I don't live close enough to S LA to visit a voodoo lady.

"Contrary to common belief, Vodun is not related to juju, despite the linguistic and spiritual similarities."

- Wikipedia-Juju

There's your first problem.

ETA-
"The term 'juju' also is used to refer to the juju bean native to West Africa. The poisonous bean grows on wild tree-dwelling vines."

That might be your second problem.
