Have granite countertops been deemed trashy yet?

Stainless steel. $4,200.

I can see a woman tiring of this quickly.

Doubtful because of the cost and honestly I couldn't give a flying frick what the OT deems trashy considering the source of the opinions.

I'm surprised concrete hasn't taken off yet. The options with it are unlimited.

Polished concrete looks awesome. I'd need to do research about staining. What happens when it meets red wine?

When I think of concrete or stainless steel I think of a contemporary look. Not sure I want that utilitarian look in a kitchen.

Edit: I had stainless steel by the range in my kitchen. I didn't like all the scratches that occur over time.

I don't like it but that's just a personal opinion....I wouldn't call it trashy

But every damn 200k spec house has granite now.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care as I'm 20, I'm just curious.

I haven't looked at houses in a long time. I'm guessing the granite in the spec houses is the thin stuff in patterns that are standard fare that the builder buys in bulk.

It looks good in our kitchen. We are looking to get another place in a couple of years and I'm not sure what my preference will be then. That said, it will probably be stone because we'll be renting it out when we are spending time there.

EDIT: Even though I haven't looked at houses here in a while I know that this 200k spec house you refer to doesn't exist here.

In the market for houses now. You would be surprised by the number of homes $250-$300 that don't have granite countertops.

Wouldn't sealer prevent this?

You dye the concrete in the mixing phase.

Lemon juice is much worse. You can seal and wax them regularly, or just deal with stains.

I made 5 slabs of varying sizes, but I didn't try anything tricky. I think concrete is best used in really cool designs - for just making slabs like I did really doesn't stand out over any other surface, except that you can make them thick. 3 of mine are 2", the other 2 are 1.5 to match the sink. They've held up for the 8 years I've used them.

We have looked at several $250+ homes built in the last 5 years without granite. All I could think about is how the original owners got taken.

soapstone >>> granite now in high end construction, especially out west - it will soon catch on in the mainstream

zero maintenance, zero sealers, totally nonreactive with any chemicals or acids etc, unstainable, and a beautiful rustic look

Concrete will look out of date in about 5 years IMHO.

Granite.

You see more granite now simply b/c more people are selling it. Price has come down a bit b/c of that.

I don't see granite in 200K houses. I don't even see any new construction $200K houses anyway.

I think all that granite sealing crap is a racket. We had granite in the house and never sealed it. We have granite in this house and I'm not sealing it.
