re: How much to spend on engagement ring?

When I was making just over $60k/year, I bought my now wife a .46 carat diamond, 14k gold band ring from jamesallen.com for a little over $1,500. It's a nice ring with sparkle; nice enough to be pretty and something she will cherish but not so expensive that it stressed me out to buy it. That's the sweet spot. I could have spent another $2k - $3k to get a bigger diamond, but what's the purpose? Who are we trying to impress? Who gives a frick except basic bitches? Smart people know it's better to put that money into a house, investment, travel, etc...

i found a really nice ring at Shane Company for 4K.
People comment allthe time about it, and i didn't spend 10K+++

I mean, it's one thing to get her a Kmart ring but if a chick balks at a reasonably priced ring it probably means you've got a lot of problems coming down the pipeline.
Exactly
As I said
If it matters, she is using you as an ATM machine and is not actually attracted to you. Divorce will be inevitable.

What year will this archaic tradition end?
I'm guessing by 2030

My husband got my wedding set from there as well. Great service and decent prices. He spent less than 3k on mine and I still get comments on the setting.

One thing I learned from TigahRag. You people are a bunch of losers.

What does that have to do with thinking an $8000 spending minimum is dumb?
Literally everything.

Yeah NIH, everyone knows you can't properly valuate rocks without entering into a marriage contract first.

Here's what I did and it has worked out for us (her).
Spent $3000 on an engagement ring. I did get a great deal since I knew a jeweler that had a side business that he worked out of his house. Right at a carat and damn near flawless. Got a diamond band of 10 1/4 carat diamonds for the wedding and then another at 5 years. For our 10th last year she had another jeweler design a custom ring. Added some diamonds and got a unique ring that she loves. Never came out of pocket with huge chunks of money all at once and now have a beautiful ring.

I bought what my bride wanted. I figured, in the big picture, it would be less expensive that way. Rock listed for $17K but got the jeweler down to a $14K cash price.

You can put $5k toward getting a slightly bigger shiny rock, or put that in your retirement account and have an extra $70k or so when you retire.

Just don't do what a friend of mine did. I was in college at the time and he was at ULL so I wasn't around when it all went down, but he had been dating this girl for several years and they decided it was time to take the next step.
They go look at rings so he could get an idea of what she wanted. When he went buy the ring he decided their was absolutely no point in paying so much for diamonds. In his own words "why pay that much for diamonds when you can get something much cheaper that looks just like diamonds? She will not know the different anyway".
So he goes buy her an engagement ring with fake diamonds. Proposes to her, she says yes.. Everything is good.. Evidently several of her friends told her the ring didn't look real. She told them it was and refused to believe it was fake, but they finally convinced her to just go get it checked out. She did. It was obviously fake. She broke up with him, didn't have any interest at all to give him another chance or hear his side of the story..

Okay PJ, I come in a thread, make a post that relevant to the thread and then you come in and post "go away".
Why? Why waste your time and internet space to follow me in a thread to post that?
