We did a 10 day trip to Italy, split between Rome and Florence. Spent roughly 10k, we could have gone for cheaper (stayed in a villa in Florence) but didn't want to shortcut the honeymoon.

ETA: we talked to a travel agent but her price was higher than what we ended up with booking on out own.

It depends on how much shite you want to buy, how nice you want the hotels and restaurants to be. Germany is approximately the same price as USA, Italy probably a little cheaper. You can stay places for $30 a night or $300. It's up to you. I would think 10k is a little too lavish.. Pay less and you'll have a better experience IMO. But it's your honeymoon so if you want to ball, go for it.

I would consider flying from Germany to Italy to save time. Tickets are pretty cheap. And you want to optimize your time on a vacation like this.

I would think two weeks in Europe would be $10K minimum.

I don't necessarily want to spend everything I save for the trip. I want to be able to have enough saved up to be comfortable while there.

I was thinking about flying while in Europe. Looks like plane tickets are only around $200 roundtrip for certain trips we may want to take.

These numbers are hilarious. I wonder if half of you have ever done any serious traveling.

Op- extreme example, but my sister did three months in Europe for $5,500. Not including airfare

Not directed at you. You can travel as cheap or as expensive as you want.

I can afford nice places but I always do hostels for the experiences.

No doubt there can be a huge range. The first time we went to Europe, we did England and Paris for a week and spent 2k including the airfare. But we're talking a honeymoon here, so I would expect to pay a little more for the nice hotels, maybe a tour or two, and some nicer meals.

Good point.

I guess what I get hung up on are all these people who don't travel because they think they can't afford it.

If she only spent $60 a day she purchased food from grocery stores, stayed at hostels/camp grounds, etc. I also wonder how much travel she did within Europe, as trains have been getting more expensive. She probably did some time in the much cheaper Eastern European countries.

Regardless, the OP is going on his honeymoon. He is going to be eating out, staying in nice hotels, paying for museums and other activities...Possibly purchasing some souvenirs. On our honeymoon we spent about $400 a day, and we employed some cost-saving measures. The wife wanted to stay in nice hotels, and that was about half of our budget.

If I wasn't with a woman, especially my wife, I could travel for under $100 a day for sure.

I see this all the time... the same people who spend $200/night on hotels in panama for a week and another $100/day on food and drinks while there... and they go twice a summer. Yet they always talk about how they wish they had the money for Europe.

My last costa rica trip I spent

$8 per day for a hostel with wifi.

Ate at sodas for about $4 per meal.

Then blew it out at bars, surfing and zip lining, etc.

Spent maybe $500 that week not including flight.

With free airline tickets due to credit card churning there is no reason everyone shouldn't be traveling.

I'm just now starting to get into the credit card rewards thing with free travel.

Reddit has a churning subreddit that is pretty good. We have good discussions on the money board as well.

I'd recommend chase sapphire first.

Then grab the southwest card

My wife and I went to Italy last year for our honeymoon and hit Positano, Rome, and Venice.

We enjoyed Positano the most - scenery was amazing.

$10 k is too much really.

We spent right at 5k but we did not stay in hotels which run $300 a night usually.

My wife found this website cross pollinate.com
In this website people will be renting out apts in the city center and such. It is easily the best deal you can find. Good luck and prepare for things not to go right.
