My preliminary guess is around $10,000. Let's say we're going to focus on two neighboring countries.

For those of you who have done it, what do you say?

Unless you plan on staying in very nice hotels and eating out at very nice restaurants, that seems like an awful lot.

What are you trying to do and who are you going with? That's gonna determine how much you need.

ETA: I'm planning on doing the same next year and the number I have in my head is $5,000, including plane ticket.

I went to Spain for two weeks last year. For the whole thing, flights, hotels, food, spending money, and a train ticket from Barcelona to Madrid we probably spent around 6k

I'm including airfare in the total price. I haven't really done all the research. Just want to see what's feasible and all of that.

Fiancee and I are thinking about honeymoon ideas and this was one idea.

$8-9K

Could probably save $1k or more using airbnb instead of hotels.

For 2 people???

Half that budget would be airfare.

For you and a new wife, you probably won't want to stay in hostels.
Where you flying from? I've seen NOLA to Frankfurt for $1500 or so.
A big part of the budget will be based on where you want to go. Any ideas on the countries?

$5000 seems low when roundtrip airfare for 2 is probably going to be around $3000 by itself.

Germany and Italy most likely. I have family friends in Germany so we could probably get a couple of free nights in one town but we want to check out my grandma's home town and Munich in Germany before going to Italy.

eta - flying from New Orleans

Well any idea where you'd be going? Next trip for me is going to be Spain and Portugal.

Seems both Lisbon/Barcelona are on this list of affordable places. Add in Madrid (do 5 days in each) and call it a great trip.

I'd also recommend AirBnB as opposed to hotels. We saved probably 3-4K on hotels in Rio for the World Cup doing that

and I know Germany and Italy aren't exactly neighbors but it's not that much of a stretch.

Flying into Germany first will be a lot cheaper. You can probably take a train to Italy. Pray they don't strike.
