When I worked at a dealership the top guy was selling 20-25 a month. Seemed like he was doing well for himself.

This is pretty accurate, also depending on the Manufacturer they can receive some money from them for hitting goals, and typically dealerships have some sort of bonus structure set up for units etc. I've always thought the sweet spot is about 12-15 units to make it worth it.

I worked at Lakeside Toyota. If you sold it at sticker you'd make about 1000 per sale.

Depends on what kind of cars you're selling brosef
1 Koenigsegg Regera will probably cover your bills for a few months
1 2004 Kia Sorento will maybe cover a #4 on the Chick-fil-a lunch menu

Depends on how much you want to work. Some salesman work from 9-9 6 days a week, and every damn holiday while everyone else is off.. If you are single, you can make a decent living, especially if you can get into F&I. If you have a family, find another way to make a living, because you will never see them.

Car lots are usually driven by bro culture and testosterone. That top guy is probably doing well but also probably living outside of his means to keep up with the Joness in the office. A bad month or two and money starts getting real tight. Lot of partying, lot of drugs/drinking, lot of ex wives usually as well.
I know a few salesmen who brag all day about their sales and the money they make and then have had conversations with some of their closer friends that have let me know the real deal with that persons finances and that it's mostly a facade

Actually quite the opposite. The money is in selling used cars. Extremely tight margins on new/expensive cars. Used cars value is much more fluid and up to interpretation and manipulation.

new cars - you can't sell enough, the internet killed that years ago.
used cars - 15-20 / month

To me, this has more to do with personality than culture. The reason they became salesmen is because they love to talk things up (themselves usually being their favorite topic). They exaggerate everything so of course they are going to exaggerate how well they are doing financially. Every salesperson I know is like this.

Shitty ones make as low as 30k a year. Your average new car store sales person is making between 40-60k a year, and there are usually a couple at a store making 100k+. I did it for 5 years, averaged about 60k. There was a month where I made 10 grand, and the next month I made 2k. Long hours at the dealership, but most of the time you are not doing shite. I actually enjoyed it, playing the game is fun. Internet sales is really not a bad job at the right store, but catching customers on the street is for the dredge of society.
Every now and then I'm tempted to go back to Lexus, but frick those hours.

Avwrage is about 10 a month. That will get you 60K+
My brother sells between 20 and 30 a month. He is in sales at a Kia dealership. He made 150k last year.
Most guy sell 10-15 a month and get 60-80k

However much it takes to pay expenses, plus a little more for saving.
I imagine it depends on the car. I read somewhere that the margin on an Escalade was up to $24,000 for the manufacturer. The same manufacturer makes basically nothing on compact cars.
It wouldn't surprise me if the dealer margin on mainstream new cars, such as a Honda Accord, was less than the margin on used vehicles.

I'd agree with that except that I think obviously the personality and the culture are connected. You need that type of personality to survive in that world for the most part so it lends itself to creating that culture. Especially in the older car lots where the good ole boys still run the show.

well what are they making now?
car prices are going through the roof, i cant imagine they make less then that now, if they do then that sucks
Internet has pretty much killed the car business for salesman.
Avg is probably $250-$500 for a new car. Used cars you can do better.
Minis will get a salesman $50-$100. Those are usually specials advertised with individual stock numbers.
When I was at a dealership, we had guys making from 30k-100k. Probably more bunched up around 40-50k. That was 16 years ago.
Dealers are making more money, salesmen are making less money. The internet has a lot to do with it.

Should I fill out my application online or would you suggest I personally walk in to do it?

How many TDs did you score as a senior in high school? Put that on the top of your resume. I would recommend just wearing your letterman actually

My experience was the opposite. Good car salesmen are organized and very methodical, rarely spend time talking themselves up. Repeat business drives success.

I've sold used cars. I was paid 25% of the net profit. Used cars generally pay larger margins than new cars, depending on model and year, obviously.
Edit: To make a decent living you needed to sell around 7 cars a month. On some you would take a bath, on others you'd make a killing. My lowest payout on a car was $75, my highest was $1250.
