My twins are hell bent on not going to LSU. Both want to check out schools elsewhere. I am freaking out related to how much this could cost + grad school.. . They are both excellent students so the mailbox is full of literature from everywhere. If you let yours go out of State how did you justify the expense? Was is worth it if you forced yours to stay in State for undergrad?

My parents wouldn't let me go more than a state away during undergrad. I got in NYU. Ended up at Ole Miss.

By let me, I mean fund it. No schollies for normal white people at NYU. Full ride to Ole Miss.

You offer them what it would cost in-state and tell them if scholarships, grants, and/or loans don't cut it, stay put.

I went out of state to LSU. Parents agreed to pay in-state tuition prices so I looked for places like LSU that waived my OOS fees due to my GPA and ACT score. We're on our own for grad school.

OP look into academic common market programs that your kids may be interested in at other schools. Allows them to go to out of state schools at in state tuition prices so long as they stay in that degree program.

Another SEC State school with an out of state waiver probably isn't much more than LSU these days. BR is expensive for a college town and TOPS isn't long for this world.

Are they going to have any scholarships?

Its all on you as to whether or not you can afford it, but if they prefer to go somewhere out of state then why deny them the opportunity if its affordable?

I live in Texas.

I've already told my oldest (the other is to young to understand), that the only way you get to go out of state for college and I foot the bill is LSU.

I went out of state to go to LSU. My parents went as did my grandfather. I however got a scholarship and my folks got to pay in state tuition. I think it was given to kids of alumni. They eliminated that years ago.

If they're excellent students then they should be able to get a scholarship.

Just offer to pay whatever LSU would cost regardless of where they go.

You're framing this the wrong way. Tell them they're free to attend where they see fit, but you're not paying more than what an in-state school would cost for tuition, so they're on the hook for the rest.

They'll probably transfer back to LSU or Southeastern after their freshman year away.

So they're cutting out the middleman and moving straight to Texas?

Most state schools have out of state tuition waivers/scholarships for out of state students that have profiles above the instate median(GPA/act/sat).

Buddy of mines kid wanted to do Petroleum Engineering at LSU (we live in Bama). Because the states schools don't offer it, little ducker got a $75000 scholly. That was on top of the 75k LSU gave him.

Pay what in-state would be and have them pay the rest.

2 of our 3 did.

Our son lived like a Crown Prince from Saudi Arabia

Our daughter, our youngest, worked her way thru college and paid for tuition and the likes. We paid for living expenses.

Our eldest stayed in town and we paid her tuition, books and some living expenses

I did. Better quality education in a state with way more professional opportunities. No brainer. Cost can be the same or less than in state if grades and test scores are outstanding.
