If my son knew TOPS was going to get slashed he would probably be out of state right now. Most likely at Springhill.

ahh... now, i see what it is...

it's a sibling pissing contest... he had two at Tulane and full rides, and being it's considered somewhat of a good institution of higher learning, you can't fathom having to try to bang the drum for some school that may or may not be in the same realm as the "prestigious" Tulane...

Wait, LSU would be the only one? Not Harvard or Yale, but LSU.

Harvard is the answer, if they are accepted and your family income is less than $150K per year they can attend for minimal cost to the family, Harvard has a ton of money to give away.

I went out of state far enough that I only came home for Christmas. If you can afford it let them go experience another state. Most people know only 1 or 2 states. If they don't like it they can transfer back.

If you can't afford it let them get loans to go, but I would only go as far as telling them the pros and cons of the different schools. Part of growing up is making a decision and having to live with it.

why would you control their future?

if you don't want to pay for them to go to school out of state, then don't. make them take student loans like 90% of students out there.

but don't be a dick about it and force them to go to lsu. most people in louisiana want to explore what else is in the world besides baton rouge.

I went to LSU from Chicago because it was the best financial deal of any school in the country.

Same with me. My dad is still supremely proud he paid less for me to go to LSU than his friends paid for their kids to go to Illinois schools.

To the OP though, don't shut the door on out-of-state options yet. If your kids have the grades and do the research, there are some good values and tuition waivers to be found. A lot of schools like being able to attract out-of-state students, too.

exactly....

tbh, it sounds the OP wants to live vicariously through his kids to fulfill some sort of void in his life... not sure what or why, but yeah...

if you went to LSU and this sentence is your example of that fine education you achieved there, then yeah, you may want to let them go out of state....

Make sure they apply to places where their scores and GPA puts them in the top 25% of the entering class so that they have a shot at scholarship money.

Tennessee didn't offer a degree in Landscape Architecture, so I got to go to LSU and only paid in-state tuition. I had my pick between UGA, MSU, UK, and Auburn. It's called the academic common market.

Stayed in state. They were welcome to go anywhere but we would only cover what it would have cost them to go to LSU for room, board and tuition.

Why would any parent let their kids graduate with student debt is beyond me. Either save it or pay for college out of pocket. Let them get a part time job for their extra spending money but you should cover everything else.

I went out of state to LSU and was an amazing experience especially with the separation it made me learn fast. I'm pretty sure a lot of sec schools offer in state to border states.... check it out.

Mine chose to go to NSU but, I would not have stopped her from going out of state if she had chosen that.

It's okay baw, Texas is where its at!

Seriously though, if they get accepted to UT or any other school more prestigious than LSU, for their future you should not dictate your love of school on them. I love LSU but UT looks better on the diploma. Especially Engineering.

grad school

Grad School typically isn't very expensive as you get an assistantship that pays a stipend and usually includes some sort of tuition waver.

Professional school is a different animal, and most students take out loans.
