I wish I had some ailment or minority in me to get accepted here. I've been told it's a pretty straightforward program focused on case studies.

I'm not disputing the quality of the students. I agree the students at MIT are brighter than those at schools like LSU. That's why I said choosing a school like MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, or Columbia is the way to go. Not only are you getting a great education, the career services offices are more intimately involved, and you are making great connections with classmates who will probably be making serious bank later in life.

True. The career services offices at the top tier schools do work. LSU's career services office teaches you how to write a resume and holds a career fair.

At that point it's driven off of the students and how far you make it through the book. To my recollection, most of my classes made it through the book and used some of the most difficult sample questions as a base for their test questions.

Did you go to any of those schools?

How can you speak on the degree of difficulty vs. that of any state school?

So now that I've blown up your argument, you're trying to turn it around. Nice.

ETA: In case you aren't getting it, you having friends from those schools means next to nothing.

You're pretty much guaranteed a position on Wall St. or executive right out of it too.

One just graduated and his starting salary at Goldman was $250k, I'm very jelly

I have made a lot of money with an engineering degree, if I had the money and opportunity to go to a much better school, I would of took it in a heartbeat.

Football and friends are great, but I would of chose education over it. Leave it to your kid to decide which path he wants to make him happy, just make sure he understands the difference in choices.

Well why don't we go ahead and start comparing high school AP classes as well.

Require passing a standardized test for credit

The classes aren't "dumbed down" at LSU in comparison to the "MITs"

I haven't seen an MIT test and compared it to LSU. But I do know the engineering classes at ULL and Southern are definitely easier than LSU. Hence why engineering students at LSU often took thermo or dynamics at Southern. LSU is in a different "tier" than Southern. MIT is in a different tier than LSU.

You can look at the book and sample problems in it and see that.

What the hell? The book is huge. It's not guaranteed that at whatever school you go to, you work all the problems in the book. The professor picks and chooses what you do. Hell you can have wide variation in the difficulty of a course at the same school. The book doesn't matter.

I am honestly amazed people are arguing against this.

Where did I ever say I didn't take 2 PETE classes and 1 CE class at LSU?

When did I ever say I did not get accepted with a partial scholarship to Colorado School of Mines?

When did I say it was purely my opinion based solely on personal experience? And not an opinion I formulated by having conversations with 1 friend who graduated from MIT and subsequently went to LSU for a different degree, 2 friends that got CE degrees from Stanford, and 1 friend that has a Harvard Law degree, and 4 friends with MBA's from UPenn Wharton?

This post is so frickING awesome.

It may be better than claiming MIT is easier than LSU once you get in.

It will be what he makes of it. My youngest sister graduated in bio engineering in the spring with a 3.9+ GPA (1 or 2 B's). On Monday she starts her PhD program at Vanderbilt. On top of that she got a national science foundation fellowship that will pay her something along the lines of 42K/yr till she finishes.

For undergrad she got into vandy and tulane but my parents wouldnt let her take out the loans that she would have needed. She pitched a fit and thought she was too good for LSU. Four years later she graduated with zero debt (tops, stipend, student job) and had a blast (went from thinking she was too intellectual for LSU football to being one of the kids lined up waiting for the gates to open).

If he's looking at grad school, I can't recommend LSU enough. If he's not looking at grad school, it's still probably his best bet.

Is the discipline of engineering different at MIT than it is at LSU. Do fluids, statics, thermo's, dynamics, physics, mathematics, etc. all perform differently in Massachusetts vs. Louisiana?

There is great variance in how the same subjects are taught at different schools. I attended UNO, while most of my friends went to LSU. My biochemistry class had around 20-25 students, and we were given essay tests. My friends at LSU were taking multiple choice tests in an auditorium classroom. A year later in dental school, I breezed through biochemistry and won the award for top student in biochemistry - and was given a summer job helping the professor illustrate the text book he was writing. That was largely due to the teaching methods of my UNO professor.

The guys who said if you want to stay in the area go to LSU and more importantly that it depends on the particular discipline are right.

Don't look at the overall engineering rankings. Look at the ME rankings or EE rankings or whatever discipline's rankings you are interested in.

Holy shite. It's not that hard of a concept.

LSU, USL, Southern, UNO, Ole Miss..... are all the same when it comes to priorities. Graduate enough. Increase enrollment. LSU, Ole Miss, etc are more even keeled than say SEL, UNO, Southern who are more edge heavy because they need more money. Of course it's easier.

But, if you can find a way to get into an Ivy League school. Chances are, you will have a smoother road to graduation than at a public state college. The better schools NEED you to graduate. They go out of their way to make you.

They aren't the same in the education you receive though. I know you're slow, but hurry up and get it through your head already.

LSU is more than adequate, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. If he applies and gets accepted to one of the schools mentioned here, you will more than likely be paying for a ridiculously overpriced education.
I agree with this. Tell him to work hard, have some fun, and not start out his career paying for student loans.

Keep in mind that the people who go to MIT are already in the top percentile and aren't likely to fail out. Compare that to Average Joe Beer Stain at LSU who is blacked out every Saturday afternoon.
