If they didn't charge you they would certainly charge your friend a surcharge on top of everything else. Plus if it is free parking, it would always be full of non-hospital cars.

If more people and Obamacare were paying medical bills, the hospitals might not be so pressed to collect money this way.

On the other hand, it's all about the money, even in health care I guess.

My bat shite crazy ex-wife used to have me park several blocks away when she visited her dying SIL. My ex was almost totally handicaped, but walked uphill all the way to save a dollar.

So the hospital charges a nominal fee to ensure there are spots for people who need to be there rather than have their garage/lot abused by people who don't want to pay for metered parking?
