quote:

The technological singularity, or simply the singularity, is a hypothetical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Because the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence ... beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable.

Think of it as another agricultural or industrial revolution. It will be a point in history that will completely change how our society works on a whole.
( Wiki Link for those wanting some more information)

How does the OT feel about all of this? Does the idea scare or excite you? Do you even believe it will happen? Do you think the singularity has already started? How do you feel this will change society?

If it happens it happens, we just need to stay ahead and not get complacent

There's no possible way we can stay ahead. The machines will outrun our ability to comprehend them. We can only hope they'll be benevolent rulers.

Or we could merge with them and keep up.

It's going to start with a dvr machine. That feature that predicts the shows you like....

That's the beginning.

This is the most likely scenario. It'll start in physical extremities (it already has), then move to sensory functions, then memory and deeper into the brain. There will be luddites drawing lines in the sand at every step but they'Ll be minorities. The end result will probably be human consciousness on computer hardware. Ray Kurzweil (sp?) is a great read for some cool thoughts and predictions on it, predictions made over ten years ago at that.

As long as the little bastards are relying on me not kicking my power cord out from under them, I'll sleep well at night.

In all seriousness, I think the immediacy of the Singularity is greatly overplayed. If it happens, I probably won't be around to see it. And I expect to have many decades left on the blue marble.

This.

There's criticism from different angles on his "predictions" but that's to be expected. He has some interesting TED talks as well.

ETA: There's a reason he's the director of engineering at Google.

I think I remember readings that one implication of this idea is that we can't know if it has already happened yet.

I think the idea was if machines can surpass human consciousness, then they can simulate it just like we create software simulations today. This means the singularity could have already happened and we're just ignorantly living life in the matrix.

This will cause conflict between my significant other and me. I'll be happy to jump into the Matrix. She's a luddite and I can tell you right now she won't go for any of that shite.

It likely will, but not in the conspicuous manner most people predict.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of interesting articles indicating not only that possibility but one that says the odds are actually in favor of us being part of a computerized simulation.

As a thought experiment, it's awesome and legitimately mind blowing. Unfortunately, there would never be any way to prove or disprove that so you can't form any sort of hypothesis on the matter.

Fermi paradox says we will probably kill ourselves before we reach the point of achieving the singularity.

I'm not sure the Fermi paradox is an accurate referendum on that, though.

The Fermi paradox tries to explain why we haven't seen anybody "out there". But what if achieving the Singularity turns a civilization inward and they lose their desire for exploration and colonization?
