The answers are: ESPN had open time slots for their schedule so they were willing to broadcast anything remotely resembling a sporting event for the ad revenue opportunities. So they agreed to cover such intensity as East Outer Podunk 2,967th ranked University vs. Inner Western Outer Suburban Enrollment of About 300 College of the Islands. And for the 2nd question: Shreveport was never, and will never be, a nice city. Landfills are about the same degree of "niceness" as Shreveport.

Do you talk a lot about things you have no idea about? ESPN wasn't even around in 1976 .

But consider that in 1976, the Indy Bowl's inaugural year, there were only 12 bowl games played.

That's actually impressive.

nice stadium.

I saw a state championship high school game there. Fair grounds.

How long ago? Stadium underwent a renovation in '94 when the city foolishly brought in a Canadian Football League team, the Shreveport Pirates. After that tanked, it took years for them to make any updates, but they redid the scoreboard and seating for one of the end zones, I believe.

Last time I went, stadium looked to be in bad shape.

I miss the old bowl names. The Hall of Fame, Bluebonnet, Copper, etc..

It wasn't "selected". Just like every other bowl game, a group got together and started it, met all the requirements for the NCAA to approve it, and there it was. You could start one in your town if you wanted to and had the necessary pieces in place.

Was Shreveport once a nice city?

Basically the same as most cities its size. I haven't been there in a long time now, but I never had a problem with Shreveport when I used to go there.

Independence Bowl is old. It started in 1976 as the 10th bowl game. Back then, there weren't domed NFL stadiums everywhere. All of the bowls were in warm weather cities, and Dallas wasn't nearly the city it is today. The bowl cities were Los Angeles, Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, El Paso, Jacksonville, and Memphis, and yes Shreveport, just 5 years after the creation of the Fiesta Bowl. San Diego wasn't even added for 2 more years.

Of the current bowl games, it is the 11th oldest, but there were several others before it which are defunct now.

I'd have loved to see the swag bag for a bowl sponsored by them.

Aaaah, ok. That's when my parents went there. They were there when Joe and Terry Bradshaw were the QB's.

Ferguson started the year after TB left, as a sophomore, the guy was ready for the NFL right then, TB got better as he moved up through the levels

back then the min payout for a bowl was $1mil/team, if you could raise it, you could have your very own bowl, and call it whatever you wanted to
