Had to go to the ER a few months back for my first HSP outbreak and got a pretty significant bill that I can't really pay off in total right now.

I mean Are there payment installments or how does it work? First time paying for this crap myself.

Yes call the number on the statement and request a payment plan.

Payment plans typically are 0 interest as well. Just do that.

Hahaha it's Henoch-Schonlein Purpura.

Basically your immune system attacks your capilleries and makes you start to bleed from the inside. Looks like a huge rash, but it's blood. Swelled my legs up and I couldn't walk.

It sucked big time and would never wish it on anyone. No known cause or cure so I'm a sucker.

Just call and pay x amount over the phone. Let them know you will coninue to pay X amount. This will keep it out of collections.

Why don't you have Obamacare? I was told this wouldn't happen anymore.

I'm 25 so I'm still double covered by my parents, so the insurance already took care of like the first $4k.

Jesus, you still had a bill you couldn't pay after double coverage?

Was surgery involved?

No, but they ran a ton of tests because they didn't know what I had originally (HSP is rare in adults). I honestly think they screwed up my insurance because I haven't had a medical bill in forever and the lady seemed absolutely amazed that I had two different insurances.

I've had hospital bills that totaled $52,000. The insurance covered it for me and paid the hospital $5,900 in total. It seems the hospitals accept about 10-15% of the bill from insurance companies. Tells me the billing total is extremely negotiable.

Check the bill, 90% of the time they eff the billing coding and charge an absurd amount.

Definitely do not call the number on the bill to discuss options.

Yep. When I had my wisdom teeth out the oral surgeon's office told me they'd bill my health insurance for the surgery portion(anaesthesiologist, the medications they used to put me under, etc etc etc) It was an outpatient surgery center place attached to the oral surgeon's office. They said whatever myb health insurance didn't cover would just be waived. I would receive no bill.

I checked my health claims on the insurance website and saw that they submitted a claim for over $12,000. My health insurance paid about $1400. No way their just eating $10,600. The health insurance claim industry is such a scam IMO.

Also, the hospital may take a smaller payment to satisfy the bill. For instance, if you owe 10k but call and ask to pay 2k in exchange for satisfaction of the bill, they might say yes. Can't hurt to try.
