And yet Dugout Doug was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. For spending the war in the rear. While later shooting down a CMH for General Wainwright, who spent the war in captivity when he did not bail out & was reduced to a skeleton. There are similarities in leadership style between Patton & MacArthur but at least Patton was in a tank/jeep leading his men from the front. MacArthur spent the war in a fancy hotel in Aussie Land.

So it's cool to send men to die unnecessarily for your personal glory as long as you're successful?
No, where do you get that from?
Sure, Patton wanted glory. But he did not sacrifice lives needlessly, which is why he pushed his men as hard or harder than anyone in WWII.
One motto ascribed to him is "The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war."

I really think his finest hour was in Korea and the Inchon landings.
Yeah but he eventually f'ed up Korea. If it were up to him, we probably would have used nuclear weapons against China and WWIII would have begun.
Totally overrated as a General.

There was no in between with MacArthur. He was either super or inept. He had nearly 24 hours advance warning that the Phillipines would be attacked, yet let his air force be destroyed on the ground. To his credit he intended to stay but was ordered out by Roosevelt. He bounced back from that and pioneered the concept of Island Hopping. His counteroffensive in the Southwest Pacific made more amphibious landings than the Marines did in their Central Pacific campaign, and incurred far fewer casualties.
Then in Korea he conducted the brilliant Inchon landings, after which he managed to get caught with his pants down again, ignoring his own staff's intelligence reports that the Chinese were about to enter cross the Yalu River and enter the conflict. And he did not understand the concept of limited war, which, like it or not, is how military operations are conducted in the nuclear age, getting in a public argument with Truman over it, which eventually cost him his career.

Patton revealed his character in his treatment of the Bonus Marchers. Great commander. Shitty human being.

Patton ordered a foolhardy raid to rescue his son in law from a POW camp when the war was nearly over. It was a disaster, and the raiders were nearly wiped out, with ~300 men killed, wounded, or captured.

He also tried to do everything in his power to shorten the war. There was an inquiry into Task Force Baum and he was cleared.

They both were there, as was Eisenhower, but MacArthur was in command and gave the orders. The following are excerpts from a brief article on the events:
quote:
By 4:45 P.M. the troops were massed on Pennsylvania Ave. below the Capitol. Thousands of Civil Service employees spilled out of work and lined the streets to watch. The veterans, assuming the military display was in their honor, cheered. Suddenly Patton's troopers turned and charged. "Shame, Shame" the spectators cried. Soldiers with fixed bayonets followed, hurling tear gas into the crowd.
quote:
By nightfall the BEF had retreated across the Anacostia River where Hoover ordered MacArthur to stop. Ignoring the command, the general led his infantry to the main camp. By early morning the 10,000 inhabitants were routed and the camp in flames. Two babies died and nearby hospitals overwhelmed with casualties. Eisenhower later wrote, "the whole scene was pitiful. The veterans were ragged, ill-fed, and felt themselves badly abused. To suddenly see the whole encampment going up in flames just added to the pity."

What if MacArthur and Eisenhower's roles had been reversed?
The best thing he did was his work in rebuilding Japan.

sort of a tangent on the subject but our friends over at Alternatehistory.com have a good thread about Mac getting killed in NYC in 1937 and Kreuger and Eisenhower running things in the PI...some very interesting butterflies...

We loved killing our generals with "car wrecks" back then.
