MacArthur was ordered out in February 1942 as it was clear we were going to lose, but he didn't leave until March 11.

I personally think he is one of, if not the most overrated American general from WWII, but it would have been a propaganda coup for the Japanese to capture him.

Also on this day

The Confederate States Constitution, formally the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, was the supreme law of the Confederate States, as adopted on March 11, 1861

When he did return, they filmed it several times to get it right. Friend of my Dad was there.

His defense of the Philippines was awful. Most of his aircraft got caught on the ground and destroyed. Tried to fight the Japanese on the beaches instead of pulling back to Bataan to fight a defensive battle.

He was against the island hopping campaign in the Pacific initially. He forced the invasion of the Philippines by basically threatening FDR by saying he'd run for president in 1944. I think the biggest black mark on him was the invasion of Peleliu which got the 1st Marine Division chopped to pieces over an island which had no strategic value.

I really think his finest hour was in Korea and the Inchon landings.

I totally agree. The Japanese there were cut off from the world.
I think the reasoning for the invasion given was the US feared the airfield on Peleliu Island would allow the Japanese to harass the Philippine invasion from the rear. Not sure where the Japanese aircraft and supplies for Peleliu were to come from.
Marine bravado, Gen. Rupertus, was partially to blame too. There was a rivalry going between the Army and marines by that time of the war.

Or on this day in 1942, "Dougout Doug" finally came out of his dugout.

And don't forget he had several hours warning that the Japs had already hit Pearl Harbour. He should have been ready they came. Should...

Facts are facts. And the fact is during the entire Philippine campaign he hid his arse in a bunker and refused to once go out and at least rally his troops. He's a prima Donna, a phony, and a coward.

Downvote it all ya'll want, stomp your feet, and throw a good hissy fit if you need. Won't matter though because it won't change the fact I'm right.

I spoke to a vet who was in the Philippines during the return.

He said many thought it would have been better if he had said "WE have returned."

My dad got there before McArthur, but I never discussed that with him. He is now deceased.

I was going to post some of this, but you pretty much said it all! He was an egomaniac, that's for sure. On a side note, his father won the Medal of Honor during the Civil War, so he had a legacy to chase, much of it with a P.R. machine.

The American Public needed heroes early in the war, so FDR and the Joint Chiefs did not want to take him down like they did unfairly to Admiral Kimmel after Pearl Harbor. This is in despite of it being inexcusable to let your air assets be destroyed on the ground even though you had many hours of notice of what happened a Pearl.

The difference is that Patton got things done. MacArthur, not as much.

So it's cool to send men to die unnecessarily for your personal glory as long as you're successful?
