Went to doctor last week. He prescribed me carvedilol 6.25mg...seems to work, my bp this morning 134/84. I was clicking in at 154/98 at doctor last Monday. Im 6'0 200lbs...I heard these meds make you gain weight as a side effect? Retaining fluid, swelling? frick that if so.

What meds is the OT on? What do you take and did it make u gain weight?

Take in less calories than you burn. Problem solved

I should have said retain fluid. A couple people told me they gained 20lbs or so because of the side effect of their meds.

I’m on a diuretic for HBP myself. I actually believe because it is a diuretic I stay a few lbs lighter.

Is it hereditary?

I know a lot of people that weigh more than that but they also are active at least one hour or more a day of weights/cardio and all have normal blood pressure.

If you dropped to 170 you would likely have normal blood pressure

Cut out or dramatically reduce sodium intake, get more cardio each day, and take fish oil supplements. Of course, ask your doctor to make sure that's all okay while taking the medication but that should do it.

I'm taking Entresto for cardiomyopathy but it's sometimes used to treat high blood pressure also. It has lowered my BP but my BP was never high at all to begin with so it actually lowers it too much sometimes and I get lightheaded. Doctor hopes to be able to take me off of it by July as long as I'm still improving.

The key to lowering high BP is less sodium and exercise. Unfortunately in south Louisiana a low sodium diet combined with exercise is miserable

hmm interesting, I thought a diuretic only produced "extra" urine to help keep salt levels lower...

Yep, it probably makes you pee a lot more, thus flushing out more fluid in your body. My medication does that to me too and I'm now like a kid having to pee every hour

I think HBP can be caused by things other than weight. I know mine is largely because of weight. I lost a good bit in 2018 and had to check it regularly because it was getting so low I was almost off of meds. I can say that if I was 6’ 200lbs I’d be off for sure.

more cardio... cut out as many processed foods as you can, including "diet" soft drinks.

hereditary, mom and grandmother has it...funny thing my brother who is overweight, doesn't have it...I gym on and off because of career , I have 2 seperate careers so I'm busy. When I'm working out I get 4 days. I'll go 4 months working out then quit for a couple then start again etc...

Hypertension is one of the conditions that for most people is simple* to fix without the use of drugs. You will get downvoted though because this is tOT and everyone here with a BMI of 30 or more is ripped with a body fat under 10%.

*note I said simple not necessarily easy

my BP meds made me gain/retain. The crossfit bros in here will just tell you to lose weight though.
