I have a small shed/workshop in my back yard that doesn't have any electricity. Would it be possible to set up a small solar panel? Really all I would need to run is a light bulb and maybe the charger for my batteries.

Is this possible?
How big of a panel would I need?
How much would it cost?

Thanks in advance

Not sure about solar panel. But it would seem if you are mainly concerned about a light, it would be much easier to get a battery operated light

Hmm. You want to convert sunlight into light.

Interesting.

Perhaps this?

I want a similar set up for a security light on my boats carport. Greedy electric co. Wants 15$ a month for a nightlight there.

Harbor Freight has a small panel that would be great for this. It easily powers a light and a stereo, you can hook it up to a battery as well. All under $200.

Just did this set-up on my shed. Lots of tutorials and info online to get the most out of this system. This kit gets pretty good reviews and seems to be a top choice for off-the-grid folks and people doing just what you want (powering a shed).
Depending on how sophisticated you want to get, you can bank some marine batteries and power quite a few things. I've seen some folks in Louisiana use this set as a generator replacement during hurricane season.

With kit, inverter and batteries, I'm only out a few hundred and the kit comes with two lights.

Is this the one you're talking about? Looks pretty good. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on this guy.

They put the on sale as low as $149. 45 watts. but you still to have to buy a car battery.

what is the "real" reason that you are wanting to power this so-called shed off of the grid?

That's the one. Not sure when the local Harbor Freight does their next tent sale but I was able to pick mine up for about $40 less than that.

Also watch some of the YouTube videos. There's a few good ones in the midst of a few wacky ones. You'll know which is which.

Also, seen some complaints about the included charge regulator. There's a couple videos with some hacks and such to maximize performance.

Good luck.

You can get a small panel and light from Home Depot. My mom has one that works fine.

After looking at some youtube videos and googling a bit I've decided I can save a but of money if I just buy one 15 Watt panel and the battery, inverter, and charger comtroller myself. This totals to about $180 which is the same price as the harbor freight linked above. The HF kit does not come with an inverter or battery though.
