Can the OT recommend a quick inexpensive way to clear up my headlights?

I tried that about a month ago and it didn't help much, unless I did something wrong.

Toothpaste works okay but in my experience they don't stay clear for long. Toothpaste has very small abrasive particles, it's how it can clean your teeth..or your headlights

I see an infomercial all the time about headlight cleaner. He just wipes them once and bam, crystal clear. Gotta be legit

Depends on how bad it is...

Lots of home remedies out on the web, some work, some don't.

If they are really old and messed up, may have to replace the headlight.

there are no permanent fixes, but a headlight restore kit will send you in the right direction, though it oxidizes on the inside of the lens too, and getting the lens off can be a bitch.

Generally involves putting your headlight in your oven for a bit (no lie).

But I bet it smelled minty fresh, right?

Yes, with a wet rag. You have to scrub but it works. I used it on my sons car about 6 months ago and it still looks good.

Does it matter what type of toothpaste? Sounds funny just to ask!

Not the gel, the white Colgate paste is what I used.

You need to sand them with three or so different grit papers and water. Use the most course one until all the blemishes are removed, sand with others ending with the finest grit, like 1500 or so. Then get one of those polishing wheels and compound they sell for lights.

Toothpaste (not gel) is a mild abrasive, like jeweler's rouge.

If the headlights are really old or in really bad shape, this technique will give some improvement, but not much.

What type of vehicle and year/model?

This sounds like a lot of work. Just buy a new car

Best method, but requires patience.

Toothpaste

Works for a few days. Rain-X makes a kit that works great.

ETA: The kit includes 3 different grained sand pads, a lubricant and a sealant. I have used it and was very pleased with the results.

Don't listen to morons telling you to use toothpaste. The lens needs to be resealed. Buy this, takes about 30 mins total and works perfectly.
