My dad was going through treatments for pancreatic cancer during Christmas 2012. He would pass away a couple months afterward. He was on some experimental meds at the time that seemed to be messing with his emotions. We had the entire family there and we were beginning to open presents. Something snapped in his mind and he started crying loudly and he grabbed my son to hug him and kept repeating “I’m going to see Jesus soon” my son hugged him. It might have been the most crushing 2 minutes I’ve ever spent on this earth.
Afterward, I found a reason to separate my son from the room where he was in to explain what was going on and why grandpa was acting that way. He understood. Tough night.

After my own father passed in 2005, my father-in-law basically became my surrogate father. We were very close.
I watched my FIL deteriorate as a result of congestive heart failure and dementia. We noticed over Christmas that he was developing cognitive issues. Less than a year later, he was gone.
One particular stint in the hospital he called me over to him (he was somewhat lucid at this point) and asked me if he had died in the ambulance. I assured him he didn't. Hallucinations, rage, disorientation, falls.
Right before the end, I took my kids to see him in hospice. All he could do was sit in a chair and stare at the floor. Didn't acknowledge us at all. It tore us up. He passed less than a week later.

I just happened to be awake at about 2 a.m. when my late wife breathed her last after a 14 month battle with a glioblastoma.
That had to be a rough 14 months. God bless you for hanging in there. I knew guy who bugged out of his marriage not long after his wife received a cancer diagnosis.
