I don't look at my tips until the end of my shift

Indians have replaced blacks as the worst tipping demographic from my experiences the past 2 weeks

Yeah.

I was hungry at an out of town convention event and went to a deli in the lobby to get a snack.

I picked up my tray, put my silverware and napkin on my tray, got my breakfast with tongs and put it on my plate, got my glass and filled up my soft drink.

I get to the cashier and she pushes a button and I swipe my card and did not leave a tip.

She responds with "so you gone do that huh?" I responded with, "I just did everything for myself, what is the purpose of the tip?" and walked away.

Tipping expectations are out of control in the US.

Ya but they clean up after you etc etc?

Tipping is a social contract. If you don't like to tip, stay home and cook your own food.

A guy my husband worked w said he got called out at houstons bc he didn't tip. He was mad and said the bill was $60 and "that place got enough" smh

Do you tip at the convenient store when you buy something there? Same exact concept. He did everything for himself and that employee (that is not paid waiter wages) expected a tip? GTFO with that.

Also, the only time we've been asked about a tip was on a fishing trip. We tipped the deckhand and he came up after asking if he did something we did not appreciate. He was actually concerned that he had offended us or something and was a nice young guy, but it was just a math error on the part of the guy leaving a tip so he gave him more to square everything up.

My parents moved from Chicago to Memphis and handed each of the three movers a 20 and the guy said "20% is a customary tip." It was a small percentage of the truck and they broke a ton of shite too.

For movers, it's actually 5%.

I remember when tipping was for service persons almost exclusively

Now my wife wants to give sizable tips to:
Carpet shampooed, maid service, appliance repair people, hairdressers, yard service, plumbers , the list is endless! Next thing you know she'll want to tip the mailman!

I fired a server once for following a customer to the parking lot and asking if there was a reason they only tipped 5%.

Yep..and I called him right back on it. The wife and I were in the bar area of a restaurant drinking and eating. Happy Hour was over at 7 and I happened to order (you had to order at the bar) another drink at around 6:55. the bartender said in a smart arse voice, "you know it will be full price, right?" I told him I didn't care, I just wanted a drink.

We are low maintenance, however for whatever reason the bartender had been a dick all evening. After I got my drink, I settled up and stiffed him on a $50-$60 tab. I returned to my seat to finish my drink and he said, "Mr. Warheel..thank you very much". I got up and went to the bar and told him is a very calm, level headed manner why I stiffed him.

The proper response to this is "well it could be zero"

I mean, you bring your food and drink to your table, someone comes and gives you utensils and tells you if you need something let them know. Then they might pick up the plates from your table, but they didn't take my order, go put it in so it could be prepared, etc. I usually just put one or two dollars on the table.

Same. If all they are required to do is bring me my drink and give me a refill, that's not worth more than 1 or 2 dollars. Hell im probably generous giving them that because those kinds make minimum wage anyways and not a normal waitress wage who works for tips

I had a girl in downtown Atlanta think I was hitting on her because I left her a big tip.

I was sitting alone at a table in a bar/restaurant for a few hours. Working on my computer. I had something to do later that afternoon and had nothing else to do. It was not busy there so I got a table in the corner and used my laptop. Ordered a appetizer and eventually some lunch. Had some beers and left a big tip

I may have been a little flirty with her but thats pretty much my personality. Friendly. I left her a very good tip for holding her table for two hours. She looked at me funny when I told her I didnt need change. I really wasn't hitting on her.

I generally leave 20% so not really.

I had a tour guide make a comment before, because I didn't tip (supposed to be a 30 minute carriage ride and it was closer to 15).

I also had a waitress get upset because I undertipped, but when I have to get up to grab a pitcher of Iced Tea so our table can have refills, you are getting shortchanged.

All I ask for is not to be out of drink. If a server can keep me wet they will get at least 20%.

The issue with this, as someone who currently waits tables, is that refills are no big deal 90% of the time, but that 5% of the time its slammed and I have 8 tables to tend to at one time, as well as shite to do in the back, I may not get to your refill right away. So if you are at a restaurant that is busy and you can tell your waiter is having to tend to multiple tables at once, pace yourself on your drinking because he/she might not be able to refill your drink on demand.

It's the one thing that drives me nuts the most as a server, is when its busy and I have a table who drink their drinks like they have been stranded in the Sahara and haven't had anything to drink in days. Happened to me this past Saturday, had a table of 6 who were like a vacuum with their drinks. I had 6 other tables to wait on at the same time as well as food to pull and salads to make in the back and wasn't able to refill their drinks at their whim. It's also why I hated waiting tables at Mexican restaurants so much, because of the tables who would go through chips and salsa extremely fast to where I couldn't possibly keep up with that.

I'm all for tipping if you feel like you get good service.

I will never understand why society feels compelled to subsidize the restaurant owners labor cost.
