I woke up Thursday with a horrible cold. I was completely congested and miserable. My gf said "eat two toes of boiled garlic. Once in the morning and once in the evening." Well, no shite it totally worked. I am pretty much back at 100%. Better than any cold med I ever tried. So, try it if you're sick.

No but I have had a ton of colds and am usually pretty much back to 100% after 3 full days no matter what I do! I will say some Vicks VapoRub all over your feet is pretty money when you have a cough though.

Garlic has strong antibiotic properties. More so than some pharmaceuticals. Also has antiviral and antioxidant effects. It's been used for thousands of years for a wide range of ailments.

Sidenote: If you ever get staph or other infections. Check out all natural honey. I've seen it take out staph in days and some studies on MRSA show it's great against the infection.

Cut a potatoe in half, sprinkle baking soda on it, and let it rest in your fridge for two days. Eat it as the sun rises on the third day and you'll be healed by sundown.

Do yourself a favor and go to your physician if you think you have a staph infection. Natural remedies are fantastic- I send patients home with instructions to use them quite frequently. And the number one natural remedy I usually prescribe is honey. But if you have any reason to think that you're harboring Staphylococcus as more than normal flora on your skin, you need a professional evaluation.

Doc that honey cured my allergies. Used to be terrible. Now I get local honey for the allergy seasons and no more problems.

I started cooking for myself about nine years ago, and since then, I've developed an affinity for foods rich in garlic, onions, and spices. Also since then, I have not had to go to the doctor for an illness. I've been sick twice - both times stomach bugs.

But I don't get colds or sinus infections any more. Seems like I used to get them every time the seasons changed. I really do attribute my current health to my diet.

Like I said- there's tons of use for the stuff as a remedy for common ailment, and I recommend the heck out of it. Staph infection isn't one of those things. Perhaps that poster meant to say something else or is privy to data I haven't come across, but to prescribe anything less than a pharmaceutical-grade antibiotic when that is the clinical suspicion would border on malpractice. Staph is quite serious stuff.

The raw garlic is actually better than cooked. However, if you do eat the raw garlic, it is best to crush it and chop it up and let it sit out for a minute up to 90 minutes as this allows allicin to form (the good stuff). Cooking garlic reduces the effectiveness, but that only means more cooked garlic is needed.

quote:

Crushing or chopping garlic releases an enzyme called alliinase that catalyzes the formation of allicin. Allicin rapidly breaks down to form a variety of organosulfur compounds. (More information)

More info on garlic's health benefits.

EDIT: Another goodie

boiled garlic will do very little to cure anything. It must be raw or mostly raw and crushed or chewed. You can steam or saute garlic and maintain the healing properties.

Haven't tried Garlic but I'm a firm believer in Echinacea. If I ever feel like a cold is coming on I start taking Echinacea. It's supposed to boost your immune system.

I also take Royal Jelly every day. It's something out of a Bee hive.Get it at any store that sells herbal supplements.

The Legend goes that though out history Bee Keepers lived longer and were healthier than others in their communities. It may be B.S. but I'm a believer.

I take a lot of zinc lozenges anytime there's a cold going around. Zinc inhibits viral reproduction so you want to keep your throat coated with it. Gives your immune system a head start and keeps the URI shorter and milder.

Garlic oil has helped with ear infections in our kiddos. Doc recommended when they are starting to come down with one, put some in their ears and few days later they are gone.

Warning: your kid will smell like an Italian restaurant for a few days.
