I was just reading an article. It was published in January, but it is about whether or not a college degree is as valuable today than it use to be. Here is the link.

LINK

This part of the article is why I ask the question.

Supply and demand, and easy access to financial aid, have diminished the value of a college degree.

College for everyone was a stupid premise.

Totally. I became an engineer by reading the internet.

A degree isn't as much about learning information as it is about showing you are capable of being disciplined enough to achieve a goal.

I know you're joking, but I really did become a Reverend by reading the internet. So I guess it diminished the value of Reverend school degrees.

Outside of engineering and medicine, undergraduate college degrees are more about discipline and demonstrating the perseverance to operate within the system for an extended period of time more than they are about what you actually learn.

Employers want to see you operate by the rules laid out for you and you see the task through to completion. The actual knowledge you can learn on the job.

That and there are only a few degrees that are really worth getting because you have to have it for licensing reasons

The whole idea that you make more money with a college degree is largely a myth

I don't think so. If anything, the saturation of people with college degrees is what is making it less valuable.

However it does provide opportunity to extremely motivated people who might not be able to attend college for whatever reason.

But I don't believe that these people are common. We are a lazy, unmotivated country.

But seriously, the question is about the free availability of information vs. going to school

not online college vs brick and mortar

Seriously, would you say other than the following, you don't really need a college degree?

Engineers
Doctors
Nurses (and other positions in the medical industry)
Lawyers
Teachers
Architects
A job in media (put there are other ways to be "in the media" that doesn't require a degree).

If you are not going to school for any of the above majors then I would say its more valuable to go to a tech school..

Academia has done plenty to diminish the value of their degrees. Internet is not related to it at all.

No.

Just asking for another persons answer.

Dont think a employer would like a online degree unless you have work experience to back it up
