Yeah, realized I'm related to half of St. Martin and Iberia Parish after combing through all of that.
Crazy thing I noticed was that brothers would often name their respective sons the same name, so you'd end up with two Joseph Broussards who were first cousins and then they'd repeat the process with their sons. Confusing stuff.

I've used it, as well as contributed. My uncles compiled a family tree on one side that went back to the 1500s. I was able to contribute that. On the other side, there was almost nothing past great grandparents, and I was able to find a little more.

I have been a member of the Ancestry.com site for nearly 10 years. I have found an amazing amount of info on my family. Tremendous amount of data is placed in every month. You do have to be carful as people will just add ancestors to their family trees that are not correct. The DNA section is the newest and most promising to open up areas of your research that would have been impossible just a few years ago. The site is also a good place to store all of your research online. The Mormons are heavily involved in the digitizing of family records. I am still unsure exactly why the Mormon religion is do focused on family history but they no doubt have pushed family history research to another level with Ancestry.

One that isn't a scam for the Mormons to proxy-baptise all of your ancestors.

findagrave.com can be useful because other people may have already linked relatives to your known dead relatives. It can be a good starting point that is free.

ancestry is great. they give you 2 weeks to use it for free before they charge you. just cancel it the day before the trial expires.

I am thinking about researching my family history. Has anyone used the ancestry.com site and was the outcome successful? Is there a better site to use? TIA

Also, did you find anything interesting during your search?

I have been a member for about 10 years now. Before that I used free sites like GENCOM and ROOTSWEB which were pretty useful, but contained a LOT of crap data. You have to be really careful using links from this sites to avoid having Jesus Christ as one of your direct ancestors. Anybody can put anything there.

The best part about Ancestry is that you get links to actual documents that can be read and used as reliable sources. You still have to invest a little time to be sure that the sources are talking about your specific ancestor and not about a similar name. Many times sources are referring to a parent or spouse = which is OK but sometimes they are referring to something that is just off the wall - never have figured out how these happen, but fortunately they are very rare.

They also link to all other trees which have the same ancestor you are searching, Many of those trees have 'stories' about the ancestor which contain images of old newspaper articles which you could not find any other way. For instance one of my wife's great grandparents from Florida had a newspaper image that described how he killed a panther with his bare hands - panther was attacking one of his coon dogs.

I have spent about 30 years researching my family tree - going back to scrolling thru micro-fiche of old census records. )Now, you can search any census record by just inputting a name.) I have gone about as far back as I can, and now only go there once or twice a week to check for new data - they put these "hints" on your tree to alert you to new information that has been input for one of your ancestors.

There is an organization called "find-a-grave" that is going about their mission of recording in searchable form every gravestone in the US with complete information from the gravestone. This has been a real boon in the past few years to settle details of birth/death dates and residence.

The most interesting fact I have found is that I am a direct descendent of Pocohantas and John Rolfe. It is also interesting that I have found only one ancestor who came to North America after 1815. Everyone else in my tree were here well before the Revolutionary War. So I can claim to be a descendent of 'colonists' not a descendent of 'immigrants.'

I still have two brick walls - One of my ancestors was born in 1832 and I can find no credible link to his parentage. Another was born in 1825, and I cannot even find her maiden name.

Ancestry is just the best site you can find for a casual genealogist. Be careful, because you may become addicted.

Also, check out your local library. A lot of libraries allow you to use Ancestry.com free with your library card.

You can find way more accurate info at a library. Ancestry.com seems to lump a lot of fake info that really doesn't pertain to your exact genealogy.

Yes, started using it last year and I highly recommend it. I have cousins posting photos of our mutual ancestors never seen before. The research capabilities are quite robust, too.

I have had an account/subscription since the early 2000s. Don't get to use it as much any more, but it is still nice to have access to when I do have some time to work on the family tree.

As others have said, you have to be careful about the info, especially from the public member trees, as a lot of that information can be plain out wrong. The access to images of documents is great and is a lot more reliable with the data. My dad's side of the family is from the UK, so Ancestry has been valuable in finding birth, death and marriage records from there.

As others have mentioned, Fold3 and FindAGrave are also great tools.

I have about 3000 people in my tree, tracing lines back into the 1700s. My wife wants to do the Ancestry DNA to get a better breakdown of her lineage, because her family has been harder to trace than mine.

All of my grandparents are dead. The last one died about 15 years ago. Does this mean I am shite out of luck?

I've used both Ancestry--be careful, it's addicting--and the Ancestry DNA. The DNA part is interesting because it links you to possible relatives who are also on ancestry, so if there's a break in the lineage somewhere, it can be extraordinarily helpful.
