I have used it for a long time. Many people get discouraged when they assume someone will just do the work for them, and they find out that's not the case.
My biggest advice for someone looking into it, is look for other peoples trees that have actual references attached, and not other people's trees. Too many people just believe everything they see. William Wallace only has so many ancestors .
Also, there are other places to get this kind of information- familysearch.org, and the Louisiana Dept of State are two places that come to mind. You get out of it what you put in.

Take nothing at face value in/on all of these sites. There are witless wonders posting complete bull shat, and false assumptions. Use other sources to confirm data.

I have an uncle-by-marriage who's really into tracing his family history (mostly on his side, not my family's).
Anyway, the consensus among the "hardcore tracers" is that ancestry.com is equivalent to how long john silver's is received over on the F&D board.

They were totally off on my ancestors. But, it looked legit and I can see tons of people being fooled cause they want to know so bad, they just believe it as fact.

Also, did you find anything interesting during your search?
Yes, found out one of my first ancestors to come to the New World was a Frenchman from Bordeaux, France and he settled in Charleston, South Carolina in the early 18th Century. His name was Jacob de Lascaux. The interesting thing about this is the fact he moved to South Carolina. At that time this was a British Colony and thus a mortal enemy of France. Why he moved there I have no idea. All I know is after he moved there he changed his last name to "Dillashaw" (not my last name BTW, this was my grandmother's maiden name). My only guess is he was either in some sort of trouble in France or maybe even a pirate.

I am assuming you mean other people, as ancestry does zero work putting together a tree for you...

No but like most Americans I'll just go ahead and claim descent from a king, a pilgrim, and an artist.
But I do know that 90% of south Mississippi claims to be related to Brett Favre.

I have used it. Found out that somewhere back in merry Old England, one of the ancestors pissed off some royals, hid out in France for a while, came back to England and assumed the name Smith. Smiths from then on.

It was a long time ago, but whomever did it, didn't get it right.
For me it was like a treasure hunt. Combing thru old ship logs, baptism records, census records and traveling to other countries to review their records, was a blast.

I did the dna stuff. Very interesting. It kept telling me I was 20% scandinavian. Finally figured out it was from my ancestors from Normandy area of France and England. Vikings, lol.

Definitely. I think of it as a big history lesson- I ran across a 42 page war of 1812 pension record the other day of a guy I was related too. He was stationed near bayou Lafourche b/c they thought that was where the British would land. Also, in the same document, he mentioned his father fighting for the Spanish against the British in the Battle of Baton Rouge during the Galvez expedition. Lots of stuff you'd never hear about otherwise.
If nothing else, I just enjoy the history aspect, and that I can pass it on once the kids start asking questions.

I used it and found out that my 7th great grandfather, the first ancestor to be born in America was the Slaveowners child. Didn't realize that the majority of my ancestors where categorized as Mullato and several of their children passed as White

I used the free trial and it was addicting. I researched my dad's side all the way back to 1500 England. Now I am not sure how accurate it was, but still kinda fun

Solid for me, I was looking for when my name sake came over from France and found it. Youre probably gonna hit a lot of brickwalls but dont get discouraged. The old census' on there is the best part, try and filter it to use the census mostly. That helped me. Took about 2 solid weeks but I got all the way to my immigrant in 1784, so no slave name for me haha. Have fun.
