If you are from south Louisiana, it is worth taking a look at the surname list on this website.

LINK

Somebody did a ton of leg work. If you can find some family members on there, you can track it back pretty far.

Nah. You have to have a common ancestor within 3 generations to qualify for that.

Traced my paternal side back to France in early 1600s. They came to Louisiana via Canada in 1765 and settled in St. James Parish.

On my maternal side we found that my 4x great grandmother was African and a slave. We had no idea that we had some African ancestory.

I know my paternal side came over with Napoleon. We actually have French soldier graves on our land.

Need to do this.

ETA: for Napoleon.

We have a fairly large book my aunt put together that traces my dad's side of the family back to Nova Scotia before the exile of the Acadians. You do have to be careful though because ancestry.com isn't always 100% accurate, mom found mistakes when she tried it out.

I spent a good bit of time on this one summer for my grandfather. I have nearly all direct ancestors back 3-4 generations and then a few common names back as many as 9-10.

I found relations to jimmy carter, robert e lee, and queen Elizabeth 1. My family name has been in Louisiana about 225 years. There's a street right outside of the French quarter named after the son of our immigrant ancestor.

On my wife's side, she is related to almost everyone of notable Louisiana history and numerous royal families and celebrities. Her grandfathers mother's surname has been in North America for nearly 350 years.

I'm named after some dead men in this link. Got married on the ruins last year. It's in Baton Rouge near LSU.

Not sure when the graves are from but they're definitely French soldiers. Our caretaker who lives there and manages it for us used to scare the shite out of us with campfire stories

Need to get my dad to tell refresh my memory.

ETA: ancestors came over for Napoleon, settled somewhere else then eventually settled in this land. Our caretaker kicks folks off the land all the time that have metal detectors

What did u find out

Found out that I have Jewish ancestry. Got the first test (autosomal DNA) through ancestry.com. Expected to verify or debunk what my mom had said about our ethnicity (Louisiana). Results said 10% ashkenazi. WTH? Then page 3 of my matches began showing jews.

So then I bought a Y-DNA test thru Family Tree. All jewish matches. Confirmed I'm haplogroup J-L816, my paternal ancestor was jewish and likely emigrated from eastern europe about 300 yrs ago.

Because my paternal pedigree stops at my grandparents, I'm expecting this search to be quite intetesting. It is very time consuming.

Whatever.
