I was thinking about writing one. This is something I have wanted to do for years. I was thinking fictional very loosely based on true events. I definitely do not not expect to make any money from this. It would be for the self gratification of accomplishing a publication.

Is anybody here published? How did you get started? How hard is it to have a book published? Do you just basically pay the money and you are guaranteed a publication?

Write a good book and you don't have to worry about finding a publisher.

I think John Kennedy O'Toole would disagree.

Not hard at all if...

To be recognized, contacted and given an offer to publish is a whole other game.

I've been published twice in periodicals just by submitting work and granting first North American rights to the publisher. I got nothing on my end except the ability to show people and say look what I did.

But seriously the issue that you need to worry about right now is just the actual writing. People who are good writers are good because they practice. It's just like anything else. Look at it like a hobby. Start putting together some writing sessions just for fun. Don't worry about getting published. Just worry about working on your craft. Your first attempt is almost definitely going to suck. But if it is something that you want to get better and you enjoy then you will keep doing it, and you will eventually get better at it.

Expecting to get published is too much. You probably will never get published. That probably shouldn't even be the main motivating factor. Just enjoy the process. Write because you find it rewarding or whatever. If you eventually get good enough to get published then that's just a bonus.

LSUZombie and some other guy on the M/TV board wrote a short book called slipway gray. I read it. It's kinda funny.

It's about killer sharks and horny teenagers.

You can self-publish electronic books through Amazon at no charge. You can self-publish through several publishing houses that will provide you with physical and e-books.

Find an agent if you want to go the traditional publishing route. Google agents or check out the latest edition of The Writer's Market. Find agents that represent books similar to what you want to write and send them a query letter. Good luck!!

Because of the advancement of technology the industry is 100% different than what you and several other poster have said.
Most publishing is done by POD companies.
Print on demand. They can publish a book one at a time or per order so that there is no wasted costs with printing 5k copies that don't sell.
They will handle getting you an isbn number, registering you with the library of congress, and making the book available via any number of channels.
You write the book, they will supply the means and fufill orders for any ordering company i.e. Borders, Barnes and noble, Amazon etc.
Marketing the book is your job but many will help you with those things too.
The one downside is that if they list your book for say $15 per copy. They send you about $1.50 per copy sold. If you'd like a copy, you can buy one from them for 20% off.
Still when all is said and done they will design, format, print, stock, ship, list, and market your book for you.
Again just google print on demand printing companies.
IUniverse out of Omaha is a pretty good one.

I've had a few books published by small presses. Advances are mostly unheard of and royalties are relatively low, though I've taken in a few grand off my efforts over the year. Nothing to brag about but better than the average author. One of my books even got a special edition hardcover release and sold out, so that was cool. I've had one turned into an audio book, and fingers crossed that a small movie deal is being kicked around for another one I wrote.

I had an agent for a little while and she got one of my books in front of the big houses. All of them rejected it and wanted it re-written before they would consider it. I passed. Too much work for something that isn't a sure thing.

I self published a short zombie serial for a little while but even that got tiring because it's a ton of work to put out a good product.

Basically writing the book is the fun and enjoyable part. After that, the editing, contracts, and publishing process; are a pain.

To help answer some questions:
- I wrote a short story and got it published after googling publishers that would be accepting that genre. From there my world got opened up to the small press market.

- Don't ever pay someone to publish you. It's a scam. Someone should want your work bad enough to pay you.

- My advice would be to write the book first and then you decide where you want to go with it. There will always be a ton of small press companies open to submissions that you can find with a google search. Some range from a one man operation to publishing books by pro authors (like Stephen King and Clive Barker). Or explore the process of publishing through Amazon.
