How is this supposed to work?

I think you're supposed to mix vinegar with the water

This

It actually works, there are many proposed reasons but it does appear to work.

Yall are wrong.

The light refracts through the water in so many ways that when it hits there eyes (which in flies cases they have a ton of) that it causes confusion so they stay away.

I heard that you're supposed to put a penny in the water/bag too. Anybody else been told that?

Which, in essence, is the same with seeing their reflection(s)...they see an ass-load of 'other' flies and they think:

"Shit, well, this pick-nick is covered, on to another"

I guess I have to stop cracking jokes about this when I see it. There are a bunch of restaurants around here that do this, and I have laughed at all of them.

No, being that flies have been known to be both in swarms and by themselves, "seeing more flies" is not what turns them away.

The light causes directional confusion and some scientists have theorized that it causes predator confusion as well.

Are you, in fact, a fly?

FWIW dropping a nice duce on the ground near you will keep the flies occupied as well.

re: Hanging bags of water to ward off flies
I was actually going to start this thread yesterday.
I have a horrible problem with dirt dobbers in my boat house. Every time I go to take my boat out, I have to sweep it out and clean all the damn dirt up.
I clean it before and after I take it out now.
