Finally made a switch from electric rock and picked up a Taylor GS-Mini Mahogany. Out of the box, the guiat has fret buzz on the A and D strings when I strum moderately hard. Am I wrong to expect a new guitar to play properly when you pull it out, or is it normal to need an initial setup on a new guitar?

Bring it back and get them to give you another one

That really the best solution? Guitar Center says they won't repair or set up. Is it safe to say it should be properly set when you get it?

I would expect a high end guitar to not need a set up, or at least for a high end guitar shop to do an initial set up.

Lower end Taylors? Ehh, not sure.

Taylor doesn't cover it under their warranty?

Yes, every brand new guitar requires a set-up, no matter how cheap or expensive.

Shouldn't be fret buzzing.

It's safe to say you shouldn't buy a guitar until you play it unless you are having one built for you.

Where do you suggest getting a guitar, then?

Not to be a dick but your first mistake was ordering a guitar and having it shipped in a box. When I buy a new one, I take a long weekend to Nashville and play a ton of them and then have them work on it and I walk out of the store with it. I'd never, ever order one and have it shipped in a box.

There isn't a whole lot of action adjustment - frets could need dressing - that's not common, but not unheard of - Taylor has pretty good QC.

Nice choice, BTW.

I must ask - if you've never played acoustic before - I started on acoustic and you may have to get used to fretting a little more firmly - not necessarily harder, but it is tougher to get away with more of a light touch on electric.

But, if you're fretting properly and still getting a buzz - that isn't normal for a guitar of that level.

I didn't order it online. I played one in store and I received a new in box from the store. I don't think I'll make a drive from Denver to Nashville for a guitar......

I have tried playing it firmly with no change in buzz.

WEll, if GC won't fix it, try and figure out which fret is high and file it down or something? Or maybe the high fret is not pressed all the way down? Anyway, that's what I'd do.

Sounds like the bridge might be too low on those strings?

If I bought a guitar from a store and they refused to set it up I'd return it. That's fricking stupid. Sounds like Guitar Center.

Does this guitar have a truss rod? It may need a bit more relief in the neck. If you don't know how to it I wouldn't recommend fiddling with it.

Fret noise problems are caused by neck set, bridge height or fret irregularities, and in extreme situations a collapsing top.

There are plenty of good luthiers in Denver. Might be a good opportunity to meet your future guitar tech.

Eta... What strings are you using? A different gauge may help.
