Grocery Stores Baton Rouge

I am sure this has been discussed many times before, but looking for some insight. I just moved to town and looking at what grocery store would be best to shop at. Normally while I would be visiting family here I would just go to whatever store was close.
Between Albertsons and Winn Dixie, which one is generally less expensive/has better deals? Shopped at Winn Dixie here last night, but was curious what Albertson's brings to the table. TIA

1. Whole Foods/Fresh Market
2. Calandros/LeBlancs/Mathernes/Target/Trader Joes
3. Winn Dixie/Albertsons/Associated Grocers
4. Walmart (Burbank only, the others are horrible)
I'd say deals between Albertons and Winn Dixie are comparable. Just depends on the day of the week
Edited to include Matherne's I knew I was forgetting one.

The chain stores (Wally, Winn, Albertsons, etc) can't touch the quality of meat/produce that the independents have. Pay a little more, get better taste.

We largely spread our shopping out among Albertson's/Matherne's downtown/Trader Joe's/Calandro's. Albertson's is a little more convenient for us than Winn Dixie and they fare pretty good for prices/quality/selection/service. Matherne's and Calandro's have better meat and produce, but the prices seem to be higher than Albertson's. Trader Joe's has good prices for produce, but the selection isn't that great.
Wal-Mart has great prices for canned goods, cereal, packaged foods and frozen stuff, but their meat is crap and you've got to put up with the total lack of customer service and the people that shop at Wal-Mart. Target isn't bad, but they have odd holes in what they offer (we couldn't get cornmeal there for some strange reason)

IMO, the Albertsons and Winn Dixie near me don't seem to try that much. I'd rather shop at the independents or at Wal Mart Neighborhood market, which definitely fights the mid sized chains like Albertsons.
There are a lot of Indie stores in Baton Rouge that also compete very well. Calandro's and LeBlancs are both serviced by Baton Rouge-based Associated Grocers co-op. Matherne's, Ralph's, Hi Nabor, Alexander's, and Reeves are as well. All of the AG-serviced stores are locally owned and operated. Some are tiny corner markets and don't have a full meat or seafood section. Others are huge and have everything you need including a full line of organic products and a Sushi counter. AG-serviced Matherne's recently invested in a new 3rd street location downtown....which a lot of locals are very excited about.
Rouses is another local chain out of Houma/Thibideaux that is moving in very slowly. The AG stores, Wal Mart, and Albertsons are going to make it difficult for them to expand here rapidly. Rouses actually used to be a part of Associated Grocers.
Trader Joe's is nice to have in town, but I would like to see another location. As in most cities, Whole Foods is probably the best single store. The Baton Rouge Whole Foods is particularly impressive IMO.

I can't wait until they open a Rouses in Baton Rouge. We go to Denham Springs about once a month or so to get stuff there. Great selection of meat, nice deli, good prices, lots of unique items, good customer service and it's a clean store. The only gripe I have is their produce department is laid out funny.

Yeah I was shopping yesterday at the Winn Dixie off of Siegen yesterday and wasn't too impressed with it. I am not too far from Perkins Rowe and saw they had a Fresh Market there, may try that as well.

Fresh Market has good specials on chicken and milk -- think it's on Tuesdays only. They're OK. They have a large produce section, good meat and bread. And unlike Whole Foods, you can buy Diet Cokes and other non-organic staples. The prices are a little high and they have a crappy beer selection. But like I said, they have pretty good specials regularly.

I never really found them to be a great value but maybe they've changed.
Check out Alexander's on Highland near Blue Bayou. It's one exit past Siegen. I know a lot of the bigger chains like Whole Foods and Fresh Market wanted that location but (for whatever reason) didn't get it.
Matherne's is across the street from Perkins Rowe. It's going to have better prices than Fresh Market, but fewer organic options.

Just go up the road to Calandro's at Perkins/Siegen. Fresh Market and Matherne's are close as well.

I shop Alexander's and calandros damn near exclusively. Have a Winn Dixie and albertsons nearby as well... Will hit whole foods if I'm on that side of town though.
The service alone at Alexander's and calandros keep me going back to them.... And they compete on price and have specialty items and local items that can't be found at the big box stores...

No point in shopping there when Calandro's, Alexander's, and Matherne's are so close. Baton Rouge has very good independent grocery markets all over town.
Also, that Jefferson/Corporate Whole Foods location is one of the better ones that I've seen. Most of the Whole Foods we have out here are not that big and fancy.

The original Hi Nabor on Winbourne Avenue. The place is immaculate.

Trader Joe’s
Whole Foods
La Morenita Meat Market
Ideal Market
Costco for Meat (their choice is real close to prime on some cuts)
Albertson’s and WinnDixie are crap IMO
Leblanc’s has nice prices on shrimp and better meat than most of the crappy chains

I just shop at Target. All the other places not named Wal-Mart are just too damn expensive.
