I know there are a lot of mil guys/gals on the OT so...

-Married
-2 kids
-E-4
-Arriving in Aug/Sept

I'm super pumped but what should I know?
Where should I live? On base/Off base?

Also thinking that I'm going to sell my truck. Don't want to pay to have it shipped as the AF will already be shipping my wife's car. Will probably buy a car with cash to use while I'm there.

TIA

Definitely sell your truck. Germany is great but not familiar with Ramstein as an Army guy. Not sure what your wife drives but I would get an Audi or BMW while you're there as they are much cheaper there then ship it back to the states at end of tour

If it's anything like other posts, MWR will have all kinds of cultural activities. Most will be sparsely attended by people who bitch about there being nothing to do.

Your experience will be whatever you make of it. When my sister and BIL were stationed in Spain, they lived on the local economy, made lots of Spanish friends, and had a blast. Meanwhile most of the others never left the base.

LOL...poor.

Anyway, you'll have fun there. Lots to see and do, traveling is cheap and you can easily rent a car or buy some beater off a SM heading CONUS. If you were single I'd say bring the truck because Germans love them (they can't afford them for the most part) and you have more fun in K-town. Sad that so many of the posts have closed down in the last 10 years and so much has consolidated to RAB.

Enjoy the beer it's some of the best in the world. If you get to try some Czech beer called budvar the original Budweiser buy as much of he Pilsner and dunkel as you can afford is my best advice. Oh and put it in a German chicks butt they like that shite there.

I've been at Ramstein for almost two years now. Personally, I would live on base. I lived off base for 6 months when I first got here and decided to move on base. The bills are ridiculously expensive (gas, electric...etc) I moved on Landstuhl near the hospital and I'm very happy.

Are your kids in school? Ramstein has a million kids and I felt my child was just a face. Landstuhl is much more involved and makes you feel like family.

I have to be honest with you, the Germans aren't the nicest people in the world. Hell, they're pretty rude and will piss you off.

Which unit are heading to?

As was said here earlier, Germany on E-4 money will limit your options.

My B-i-L spent a bunch of time there as an officer with a stay-at-home wife and kids. They lived off-base in a little town just West of Landstuhl. (Bruchmülbach-Miesau) It was wonderful for my family to visit them there, if you have family that can come over during your stay that's a great chance to be tour guide for them.

From what I know, leave your truck here, sell it if you need to and use the proceeds on buying a car big enough to fit everybody and some gear for travel once you get there. Gasoline is super expensive there (compared to most everywhere in the US). If you live on base (recommended for your situation), you'll find that you probably NEED just one vehicle. I'd try to make it without the second vehicle.

It's beautiful there and it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for y'all. Trier, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, the Black Forest, Reims, Verdun, Karlsruhe, the Rhine River valley are all fairly close. If you do it right, your kids will remember it as a special time in their lives and it'll bring y'all together as a family being together more there than otherwise here in the States.

You'll appreciate good wines and beers better afterwards.

Good luck.

My dad was stationed there. We lived there around 1980. We didn't live on base. We lived in government leased housing in K-town. Lived right in front of the 1-FCK soccer stadium. I think he was in the 526th.

Can't really tell you too much as things have changed so much since we lived there. No directv, vcr's, or phones. -- home phones. It was different then. We were really cut off from the states.

I went to Kaiserslautern Elementary School #2.

The town of Frankenstein is close by. Castle ruins weren't the best, but you gotta go to Frakenstein.

Strange because I've been to Germany many times and I've never had this experience. I've always found it to be the opposite.

I'm here now and I've gotta agree with you, most german people I've interacted with have been friendly if you at least try to speak a little german. OP, download the google translate app and specifically the set/book for german. It'll come in handy more often than not. Also, I've found that prices are comparable to the US, not all that expensive plus the euro and dollar are getting much closer in value (think its 0.9 euro to 1 dollar).

I should clarify.....not all are rude. But there are some who rub you the wrong way. When comparing to my time in Japan, I find the Japanese to be much nicer.

With all that being said, you will still have a great time during your assignment.

Germans are culturally Type A folk. Their society, customs, mores are built around this ethic. If you know any Type A people from any culture, you realize it is just the way they are. The Type A people don't like having to deal with (what they perceive to be) mediocrity.

When Type B people go to Germany or deal anywhere with Germans and try to make these Type A folks adapt to Type B ways, how will that probably turn out?

tl/dr: Stupid Americans don't GET Germans
News Flash: Germans were like that before there was a USA. Get used to it.
