Google set to unveil Android TV

According to documents obtained exclusively by The Verge, Google is about to launch a renewed assault on your television set called Android TV. Major video app providers are building for the platform right now. Android TV may sound like a semantic difference — after all, Google TV was based on Android — but it’s something very different. Android TV is no longer a crazy attempt to turn your TV into a bigger, more powerful smartphone. "Android TV is an entertainment interface, not a computing platform," writes Google. "It’s all about finding and enjoying content with the least amount of friction." It will be "cinematic, fun, fluid, and fast."
quote:
While Android still lives under the hood, the interface will consist of a set of scrolling "cards" that represent movies, shows, apps, and games sitting on a shelf. You use a remote control with a four-way directional pad to scroll left and right through different suggestions, or up and down through different categories of content, each with their own shelves. Much like on other set top boxes, each item will be like a miniature movie poster or book cover, and you’ll pick the one you want. The controller will also have Enter, Home, and Back buttons to help get around, and there will be "optional" game controllers.
Android TV will also support voice input and notifications

starting to seem bizarre, all these things coming out like this & Amazon's "new" service i saw announced this week
yet none of them give what people really want- the ability to legitimately get premium movie and ESPN channels without a cable subscription
yet there's always this stupid hype like these are groundbreaking things

They would if they could.
The cable oligopoly, however, prevents this from occurring - they're insistent on preserving their antiquated model of entertainment.
No one wants to pick up a plastic infrared remote and scroll through a list of channels anymore. People want to hand pick the channels they're interested in, and they want to be able to access these channels from any device with a broadband connection.

Anything to put even more pressure on the current internet/cable companies is welcomed.

It's not really cable companies that are keeping this happening, it's the content providers. It's a racket, they make heaps of money off of cable companies and force the companies to sign contracts for certain channels that include lots of channels that nobody watches and the cable provider makes no money on. Viacom and that whole ilk doesn't want a paradigm shift, not cable companies.

From the screenshots I don't see how that looks much different from Apple TV, Roku, etc.

Another 100 dollar device that streams the same few services.
Of course they will probably abandon google tv devices within a year.

A la carte channels just won't ever happen because channels like Viacom force you to pay large premiums for popular channels to fund smaller channels. So even if you don't want the extra peripheral channels, you're still going to pay for them.
Granted, I'm sure you know this....but it isn't anything cable, satellite or internet tv providers can provide. They aren't going to lose money on channels we don't want by allowing us to not pay for them when they still have to pay for them.
