Multiple sightings confirm autonomous vehicle is being tested on public roadways

A Google self-driving car has been spotted in Austin, Texas, prompting speculation as to whether the technology has been secretly approved for public testing by city or state lawmakers.

A video uploaded to the hip hop forum TheColi.com last week shows a Google self-driving vehicle parked in a vertical parking spot on Congress Avenue in south central Austin – less than two miles south of the state capitol.

A gyroscope spins atop the roof, as the man filming approaches the car, which has “Google” clearly emblazoned on both driver and passenger sides.

A photo posted to Reddit Austin a week later features the same Lexus RX 450h with identical California license plates traveling north on Guadalupe Street.

Oh good it can sit in traffic autonomously.

Actually it might be an improvement over the current drivers here now. It couldn't be any worse.

Once these become mainstream, you won't have to worry about traffic anymore. Inconveniences such as red lights will be a thing of the past. Although some may still choose to have their own vehicles, many drivers will likely all have an autonomous vehicle service that takes us to and from our destinations each day, as that will eventually become the most economic option by far. Those that choose to have a vehicle of their own will eventually have to either purchase an autonomous vehicle or convert their existing vehicle. You will get to work (if you are not already working from a home work space by that time) and home much faster. Some of the children born in the last few years will never need to drive a vehicle or have to own a drivers license.

A friend went to a expo recently in Texas, and was able to ride in 3 autonomous vehicles, one being a semi-truck.

The vehicles still have to have drivers at the wheel in public, but they functioned well.

Amazing technology.

There are actually people driving the cars, it's just that people in Texas don't see anyone else on the road, so they assume the car is ambling along without a driver.
