Because not every 18-21 year old is as wise as you were.....
There are many reasons college students major in worthless degrees, and honestly I wouldn't place all the blame on the student.

Yea. God forbid we have people concentrate on why and how things in the present came to be.
To the OP, why are you going back to school? What is your desired career? If it's accounting, you could take certification classes then get your CPA. Don't waste your money.

I did this after my first degree.
Look at the curriculum for your first degree by course, then do the same for the second.
You only need to take the difference between the two to get a second degree. If they have different standards for passing that might be an issue (I.e. for engineering IIRC I needed a C for all curriculum classes, while for my first degree I did not). I did it because at the time LAPELS didn't recognize only an MS in engineering as adequate to take the FE exam, otherwise I would have just gotten a masters.

I think accounting majors make more than history majors... I wouldn't call that pissing away more money.

I would agree with this. Unless you want to change to a different field that requires such, there are plenty other avenues to improve your career options.

credits from my history degree would transfer over
yikes. I think undergrad pre req classes have a shelf life. i.e. they're only good for so many years after you take them.

How does that make any sense?

Wow, I'm actually in the process of doing the same thing. I also have a bachelors in History and was going back for a degree in Accounting. Your general classes will all transfer over, you'll just have to do the prerequisites for the accounting curriculum. I'll be taking my courses online through Belhaven because they have the entire program online and each "semester" is only 8 weeks. Can finish the entire program in a little over 18 months.

Got my 1st BS in Marketing from LaTech in late 1980's (after swapping from Petroleum Engineering, 1st crash in 1982-83 where oil went from $32 to $14 /barrel), went back to NSU for 2nd BS in a medical support field after moving back into the state this century. Only had to take the general med pre-clinicals. Chemistry and maths and other basics carried over from roughly 25 years earlier. (it's not like valence shells, Shakespeare, or mean/median/mode have changed over time)
Now with my 249 credit hours, 2 BS degree's, over a decade experience in 2 career fields, I get to job hunt again as both the experience fields are flooded.
Choose wisely spending on a 2nd degree!

Well aware that I will have to take all of the accounting core classes, just don't want to have to take BS ENGL 1001, etc again. Any info is helpful.
All gen eds should transfer over. A lot of your higher level classes should count as electives. They'll generally work with you--you might have to go talk to a department head and get them to sign off of a few things, but t should only take you about three more semesters to get another BA from LSU.
They aren't really in the business of turning people away who are trying to write more checks to the university.

I had to take out student loans when I went back to school, but my first degree was 100% free. I went to UA and UAMS so it was in-state tuition. Very little debt in comparison to my income.
Going back to school can be an excellent idea if you have a plan and are realistic about your earning potential. I lost some years of income, took on some debt, but I when I finally finished school and got a job, I started at six figures. Totally worth it.

I did my research and wound up getting accepted into SUBR Master of Engineering program
I don't know if this has ever crossed your mind but here goes....
Do you feel SUBR gets the academic respect other institutions with similar curriculums get? Do SUBR grads get treated equally when applying for jobs?
Also, do their peers take them seriously if/when they land their first job?
Good luck.

Your other degree should be a welding degree or something similar. You already made a terrible decision with a history degree, why compound it?

A lot of people on here don't understand the concept of getting a career because it is something you want to/enjoy doing. To them anything but an engineering degree, or starting full time at a plant at 18 is a waste of time.
Is a college degree a lot less valuable today than it was 20-30 years ago? Absolutely. But if you get all of your ducks in a row, have a plan to get a good job in your field after graduation, going back is time well spent.

I am returning to school to get a microbiology/Biochem degree (not sure which one I'll go with yet) before applying to Med school.
I'd like to do medical research.
