Good. Because I live in the SG area and the garbage man comes at around 4:30 am. That is ridiculous.

You frickers need to learn how to sleep, I've only heard my trash getting picked up a few times and went straight back to sleep after they were done

Well it's apparently something the residents of the city wanted, which is why it's a local ordinance. Do you think the garbage company is taking calls at 5am? Who do you call at 5am to bring attention to this?

The police department, 911 is for emergencies.

It is. Ironically, that is why law enforcement had to get involved.

Sandy Springs doesn't provide trash service. The residents/business individually contract with haulers themselves. So while you might have your trash picked up by the people who come at 8, your neighbor might be getting his picked up at 4AM by a completely different hauler.

Ordinarily, the city would just fire the hauler for not following the law, but the city wasn't the one paying the bill.

I have no problem with privitization in general, but trash collection seems like one of those things that works better when centralized (either by local govt or by neighborhood).

That's what I thought too. Sounds like they need to make sure their next contract with the garbage company has a "no collections before 7 a.m." clause in it.

And you know these are the same people who would bitch when the truck is doing pickups during rush hour and blocking traffic.

ETA: Just read the above post...I didn't realize that's how it worked with each house privately contracting different companies.

Yep. It also works that way in the city of Milton (about 20 min north of Sandy Springs). I lived there for about a year.

They incorporated after Sandy Springs and I think tried to model themselves after them in certain ways. They do trash pickup the same way, but there is a list of "approved haulers". Even then, we had like three different haulers coming through our neighborhood each week. You kind of get tired of seeing trash cans out at the curb every other day when you go for a walk

I was so glad to move back to Gwinnett county. Sometimes it's nice when you're told who/when/where and it simply goes on the property tax bill

Every time I see some dude hanging off back of a garbage truck I have instant respect.

That's what I call wanting to work.
Plus they usually running from can to can.
Weather be damned.

The ordinance exists so that loud garbage trucks aren't waking people up at 5:00am.

And so people are allowed to take out the trash at the last possible minute to avoid build-up.

I'm pretty sure the mayor of Sandy Springs is a ceremonial position. The city is run by CH2MHill, IIRC.

Didn't they get fired? I could be thinking about the wrong city.

ETA: just googled it. It seems like they didn't renew in 2011 and took several of their functions in-house, but I couldn't figure out who's doing what today so maybe they went back to using them?

Do Sandy Springs houses not have insulation? My garbage man comes anywhere from 4:45-9:00am and even if I'm awake I don't hear the truck sitting in my house. I just see him go by the window.

I'm guessing there are no train tracks nearby.
