I ditto AutoYes_Clown. Downtown has it's attractions and a museum that is not bad. B'ham offers some cultural and music scenes as well. Almost everything is in the suburbs and there is plenty to do and plenty of restaurants there. I have been here a while due to work and so far so good. Oh, if you fish and hunt, that is a bonus here in north central Alabama.

Birmingham is cool. I moved here from BR/Lafayette and I like it better, besides LSU (miss that aspect). Made the transition to Chelsea, but about to move to Crestwood (up and coming area worth looking into).
Great terrain, pretty well kept up and some really good people. One more Tiger up here to dilute them damn Bammers.

Up and coming due to all the gays that moved into that area back in the early 2000s.
Used to work at the corner of 50th St S/5th Ave. S in Woodlawn Ave. House I used to drive by on way to work had a Trans-Am on blocks. When hood was open it was open for business and when hood was shut, business was closed.

Im not gay but I lived with best friend in Crestwood in early 2000s. He had the house note and put $30k into it. I lived for free for helped renovate. He made $70k when he sold it for $100k more after 4 years.

I lived in Birmingham for 3 years and really liked it. Pretty good hiking and mountain bike trails. There are lots of good roads to just go for drives. Airport has pretty good flight options and the city is located where you can take some nice weekend road trips.
I had no problem finding plenty of good restaurants. I found all of the "Cajun" options pretty mediocre though. Like others have said, I'd look in Vestavia or Mountain Brook to live.

The Brook if possible. Vestavia's once thriving apartment communities will soon resemble those in Homewood.

Birmingham is known for its restaurant scene what the hell are you talking about?
The Highlands Bar & Grille, Bottega, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Jim N Nicks, The Fish Market, The Red Zone (a foodie Sports bar) Steel City Pops. Birmingham is a Foodie paradise currently.
Lots of new very nice cultural attractions - all the bars/clubs on 5 points South, Regions Park, The Zoo and its massive renovations, Railroad Park, Sloss, etc.
The Birmingham Metro area is going through a very nice few years of Urban Renewal.

It actually has some superb restaurants like Bottega and Hot Hot Fish Club. Those places can hold their own against many others in the south.
Also, the Garage cafe is an awesome dive bar. As far as living there, idk.

Birmingham is not redneck at all unless you are looking for that scene. It's easily big enough to fall into whatever crowd you want.
