Some travelers are beginning to question whether chasing elite status with airlines is worth the effort.

Airlines, hotels and other travel providers initially made it easier to secure and maintain status in their loyalty programs in the wake of the pandemic. They granted free extensions to people who had high levels of status, with the number of fliers in elite tiers ballooning as a result.

Now, those extensions have largely come to an end. At the same time, many status perks—such as first-class upgrades or cashing in miles to book luxurious vacations—have become harder to secure.

The double whammy has many travelers re-evaluating whether status with an airline is worth the potentially higher cost of booking flights with a single carrier rather than playing the field. The result is that some are choosing to ditch their status altogether and become travel free agents.

The first quarter of this year marked the “downgrade apocalypse,” says Mark Ross-Smith, chief executive of StatusMatch.com, a company that designs and implements loyalty promotions for travel companies.

Millions of travelers have had their status downgraded

If you understand how it works, it is very much worth it. I haven't sat with the commoners on a flight or at a gate in a long time.

Delta Platinum Medallion Elite Plus is pretty legit for getting constant upgrades and Sky Priority line to get through security quicker. The best perk imo is the 3 free checked bags up to 70lbs each.

Yes, worth it.

If anything, for when shite goes wrong. The airlines will take care of their status members and screw over non-status passengers every time.

The super elite status’ is worth it. I was in United Airlines global services and the service that you get at that level was off the charts. They would hold planes for me if my connecting flight was late, I got first pick if food on long flights, boarded first, first seat selection, etc. At O’Hare you have a separate security that you go through so I never had to wait in line.

I had the program for 2 years and it was the absolute best!

And shite ALWAYS goes wrong.. i cant tell you the last time i had a flight that wasnt impacted in some way- weather problems, general delays etc.. i dont have much status with any of the airlines anymore, but i just feel extremely fortunate to be able to make a good living without having to fly a lot and depend on the increasingly crappy airlines anymore .

I recently read in a magazine while flying first class that Airline status has just surpassed CrossFit in “things I tell everyone” list for 2023

I average 2 trips a month for work. I used to be dedicated to southwest because I could hit A-list preferred pretty quickly. then after the pandemic, poor performance along with rising costs for their flights made it less of a good option so I had to switch to American.

Unfortunately, what I’ve found since I switched and post pandemic changes is that most major airlines are relying more on tying status to dollars spent than segments flown. It takes more segments now than it used to. Therefore, getting a credit card and spending excessively on it seem to the be the path to higher end status. Sadly, we have to use corporate cards so good status for me seems to be gone.
