Reasonable zoning is necessary.
But NOLA groups repeatedly try to block endeavors that are perfectly compatible with the neighborhood use.
New Restaurant on that quiet residential street called Rampart - objections
Tulane tries to redevop the blighted uptown square - objections.
Walgreens on Magazine- objections.
Expand Stuart Hall - objections
The list goes on and on.
A lot of it has to do with economic protectionis and keeping competition out of the city. These neighborhood groups are financed by entrenched interests. Some even hire professional protestors.
The protectionism drove the black middle class to Atlanta in the 70s and 80s.

I used to like the guy, be he continues to demonstrate what an idiot he is. Fits right in with the rest of the family.

In the cool places like Livingston Parish, they build shite and worry later about how to deal with traffic, flooding, etc. And who cares about how an area looks or anything.

why pick the "easy target" in LP and not Houston, which is kicking the crap out of Nola in terms of economy (and has better crime rates)?

I agree. Some of those people drive me nuts. The situation with Rampart and Esplanade is a perfect example.
The 20 year abandoned gas station and shitty property next to it are better staying as is instead of turning it into a nice restaurant that someone wants to invest a few million into.

Luckily the miserable fcks look like they are about to finally lose that battle.

and this. crony capitalism to use government to keep out competition to hurt consumers and residents at the expense of connected LOCAL interests

Just like a crumbling Holy Cross campus is more desirable to Lower Ninth Ward/Holy Cross neighbors than condos would be. But meanwhile, continue to cry that you don't have a grocery store in your neighborhood. (Or how long you went without one... I think one may have opened, or is opening soon.)

NOPD is overstaffed with functional retards and criminals still. In all of my years, I have only met 3 or 4 NOPD cops that I would trust holding my phone for 10 minutes

You need a HS diploma or GED along with 60 college credit hours and cant have a felony conviction or misdemeanor against a person/sex offense.

It's not really the officers fault. They are all doing a job no one else really wants to do in a shitty full of criminals. There are a few bad ones just like any other profession, of course. But the solution to the crime problem starts at the top

The FQ needs something similar to the Basstapo in Ft. Worth. The Bass Brothers own a hefty portion of downtown Ft. Worth, and their "security force" keeps everything safe.

I'm not going to argue that he is not an idiot. But I think a much more tragic dynamic is at work here. Just like his father he has to walk a fine line to appease and cater to the black power groups not to mention the lilly white liberal do gooders so bullshite crime fighting policies are put into place. At least under the black rule of the Morials, Barthelemy, and Nagin the NOPD was allowed to do their job.

BINGO! I witnessed the mounties knock down a young blond college student, surround here with horses and arrest her for petting a horse. Real criminals are no concern for police in a lawless city.

That corner of Rampar and Esplanade has been a dark blighted no-man's land for decades. An out of state investor wants to come pump a couple of million dollars to make a vibrant restaurant, which would substantially expand the area of consumer foot traffic at many hours (substantially decreasing dark dead zones where these predator types like to emanate from) and all they do is face nearly 10 years of bullshite red tape and palm greasing attempts. It's unconscionable.

I'm beginning to think the mayor and police chief are deliberately trying to foster chaos so the federal government will either relax the consent agreements or try to get more federal money so they can pilfer it.

it might be that if we do things based on following the consent agreement, that we'll see even more chaos...

What are the qualifications to become one of NOPD's finest? 60 college credits, WTF!! I think your numbers and facts are way off on that one

Military experience

Or

60 hours of college credits plus high school degree / GED

Those weren't always the requirements though

Lower crime rates maybe but You can't walk a block in houston without someone begging you for money or food. The panhandling is exponentially worse than Nola.
