I've been to Austin/San Antonio before a couple of times, but have heard about the area just west lately as having a developing wine country. I'm in west LA so it looks to be about a 6 hr drive.

Anyone ever visited the area? Is there enough to do out there to stay busy for 3-4 days or should it be just a day or so stop on an Austin trip?

Any recommendations on places to stay, eat/drink? Are there any entertainment options beyond wineries or is it pretty much a small town with wineries nearby? Thanks in advance.

Went there on an engagement trip... I don't think there is enough to stay busy for 3-4 days, but you can easily spend 2 full days.

There are a lot of wineries, of course, which is the key attraction. Some good German restaurants and beer gardens in town, which is nice because everything else closes early. There are two breweries in Fredericksburg (one on the main strip and one just outside of town) that are fun to visit.

I'd highly recommend stopping at the Garrison Bros. Distillery... it's the same direction as most of the wineries and worth a stop if you like bourbon.

Great town! Be warned that the town is virtually shut down on Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays depending on the establishment. I think you could definitely make it a day but no more than two. Spend the rest of the time in SA or Austin.

I also went on a tour of LBJ's ranch which is west of Fredericksburg. That was interesting if you like that kind of stuff.

Fredericksburg is kind of a tourist trap. The town itself is ok but I wouldn't want to spend more than a day there. 3-4 days may be a bit much. You could tour the wine counrtry one day and go to Enchanted Rock another day.

German biergartens, tons of little botiquey shops, several nice restaurants, and around 8-10 vineyards. I would definitely check out Enchanted Rock, which is about 20-30 minute drive from Fredricksburg. It would be the highlight of your trip, imo.

But like the other poster said, I don't know about spending 3-4 days there. 2 tops.

FYI - I got married at Becker Vineyards at Fredricksburg

Yeah, this is a good call. Go early! It's definitely worth the time, and if you go early and get there when it open you'll be back in time for an afternoon in town or touring wineries.

More of a day trip destination IMO. We've been to a couple of the wineries around then in town for some more tasting and let the girls do some shopping while we smoked some cigars.

Bring a picnic basket/cooler with summer sausage, bread and cheeses as the wineries will let you bring that in and it's a good addition to a couple bottles of wine.

Fredericksburg is a lot of fun and worth visiting...for a day or two. Spending more than that with Austin in close proximity doesn't make much sense.
