He is still being charged with one murder for hire plot where he tried to have one of his admin killed but he tried to have 5 more people killed and I think those were dropped because of a rogue DEA agent.

First post for me- I have been following this entire story since I read a article on "wired" by Josh Bearman that details the entire saga from start to finish. Good read and a book is coming out about it in 2016. To the Silk road owner it was a libertarian political movement in addition to selling drugs. Also, one of the law enforcement officials (DEA I think) set up a sting and during the entire operation actually turned criminal- stealing bitcoins from a fake murder.
For some reason, I can't post the link to the article- so maybe someone else would be kind enough to get the article up: "The Rise and Fall of Silk Road" is the title. Also, it sort of is a primer about the 'dark internet' and actually shows how to set up on it for criminality using TOR.

If he's convicted of murder then a life sentence is expected. But this is ridiculous and that judge is a horrible bitch. This country is addicted to prison. Nothing at all gained by keeping him locked up when he's in old age. 20 years would've been fine. 30 years even. HIs life would've been ruined. But now our genius government will house him maybe the next 40 or 50 years and will pay for all his ailments as he ages. He'll be 80yrs old and still in prison for setting up a website.

And there were two agents that stole during the operation but yea one was more involved than the other and did some crazy shite. He even stole bitcoins from people using his CIA connections from a site/people that had no ties to Silk Road.

He did way more than that and you know it. He helped traffic drugs and even sold drugs himself. A life sentence may be harsh but let's not oversimplify what he did for the sake of argument.

ok he set up a website and sold drugs on it. Doesn't merit a life sentence. It's retarded. A 20-30 yr sentence would've been plenty.

I know, but I imagine it was taken into consideration. There is always going to be side criminal activity with a marketplace as huge as Silk Road was and no doubt all of that was taken into account. They also wanted to make an example out of him. He will plea anyway and may get it reduced (which really won't matter) but for now they got the headlines they wanted.
I am not saying they got it right but people really need to stop oversimplifying what this guy did and stop making him into a hero.

You're probably right but he should only be sentenced for what he was convicted for. I don't make him to be a hero, he just doesn't deserve this sentence.
And I think it's more of an exhaustion with the war on drugs.

The other thing I never understood is that this guy is worth millions and is running an illegal drug market that he can run from anywhere in the world yet he chose to stay in the USA instead of going somewhere with no extradition agreement with the USA.
