Then what happened a few years ago in Georgia?

Or right now in Ukraine?

And why, when Russia is seeing an economic downtrend do they embark on the largest military expansion the world has seen since WWII?

And why resume provocative bomber patrols right off the American coast?

Why make practice bombing runs on Great Britain?

Why develop and deploy a new generation of ICBM's

I agree. The last thing Russia wants is to engage the West, led by the U.S. Sure, they could invade the Baltic nations but they wouldn't be able to hold it. I see no scenario where it would be possible for them to hold territory in a conventional engagement. They have nothing to gain but so much to lose and lose they would, they know it and we know it.

On another note, it never made sense to me why NATO admits countries that have nothing to speak of in defense. The Baltic nations as well as a few others contribute nothing of note in terms of defense and have no ability to project force. I do have empathy for Russia in their belief that NATO has encroached and encircled them. While I can see their concern, they can't really do anything about it

It would take months for us to move a force into Europe capable of driving the Russians from the Baltic countries. And to be honest, I doubt seriously the current leadership in Washington would even consider it. Look at how the public reacted to our "heavy" and "mounting" losses in "quagmires" of Iraq and Afghanistan. Look at these numbers...

Iraq: 4,425 deaths between 2003-2012 (491 yearly average)
Afghanistan: 2,326 between 2001-2015 (166 yearly average)

(to give some perspective on how little we can stomach war losses, there's usually between 30,000 - 40,000 people killed YEARLY on American highways. Also, over the same timespan of both the Iraq & Afgan Wars, more than twice the number of people (13,473) were shot and killed in Chicago than in both wars combined.)

I say all this because if it ever did come to a war with Russia to retake the Baltic countries, our casualty rate would be way off the charts and on a scale not seen since WWII. I just don't see the American public accepting that.

Darth, I find it funny the cool thing nowadays is to make fun of France. Especially since the people that are doing it are people in south louisiana and more likely than not, have ancestry roots from fricking france.

I've never thought about that. But you're right. And not only are they from France, but a good many of them come from people who were kicked out of not only France but Canada as well.

DISCLAMER: One of my earliest ancestors on my mother's side in the New World was a man named Jacob de Lascaux (probably misspelled that btw) who left Bordeaux France around 1740 and moved to Charleston, SC. Once he got there he changed his last name to an English sounding name.

I've always wondered why he made this move and changed his name. It would be like someone today moving to Russia and changing their name. I'm guessing he was either a criminal or perhaps involved in Piracy.

When i moved down to south LA i was excited because i was moving to where my ancestry roots were set in cajun country. I get down here and you have all these BR/NOLA city baws who think they are so cool and outdoorsy cause they have a bay boat and go fishing in the marsh making fun of the country their ancestors are from.

it was really odd to me.
