Assuming you're around ~26, your BMR is only 1858. Eating 1700 calories is only a 150 calorie deficit. Takes 3500 calory deficit to burn a pound of fat.

Tl;dr - you need to increase your deficit to around 500 under BMR, not taking into account your workouts

Why buy something your body naturally produces?

These stupid ketone esters are pretty useless as mentioned earlier.

Sure, but I am not eating back my calories from my workouts. And I am working out 5-6x per week for 45-60 minutes. In addition, I use a standing desk and walk frequently (like to the grocery store, doctors office, coffee shop). The standing desk alone is probably 250 calories over the 9 hours. I figure my TDEE with workouts is around 2300-2400.

Finally, even if I am only doing a small caloric deficit, I still shouldn't be gaining weight. In addition, I was probably eating around 2400 calories and I wasn't gaining weight! I have been 185-188 for the past year.

Its really annoying, as dieting is hard work.

Supplemental ketones are a marketing ploy and completely bogus. Here's how to get into Keto:

quote:

What initiates ketosis is an empty store of liver-glycogen, so this method will attempt to eliminate liver-glycogen stores in the quickest manner possible.

Here is the full-proof method to enter ketosis:

Day 1:

Do not eat anything after 6 p.m.

Day 2:

Wake up and perform HIIT (high intensity interval training) or intense conditioning/weight training on an empty stomach
Begin a strict ketogenic diet with 0-2% of calories attributed to carbohydrates.

Day 3:

Wake up and perform MISS (medium intensity steady state) or light-medium intensity conditioning/weight training on an empty stomach
Begin a normal ketogenic diet with 5% of calories attributed to carbohydrates.

Yea they are useless for getting into ketosis. I do know though that many competitive bodybuilders like them as they say it makes them feel better especially when lifting and near a competition.

Honestly before this thread I thought that's what they were made for, had no idea people used them to lose weight

if I'm understanding it correctly, a true ketogenic diet (as opposed to atkins), requires the majority of one's daily calories to come via fats (75%+), with a decent amount coming from protein (20%+), and some carbs sprinkled in. what kinda "real" foods are rich in fats, but carb-free (or low carbs), which would keep me somewhat full? obviously meats are good, but wouldn't that pretty much be atkins then?

Steak with butter on top plus a shake made with heavy cream and egg yolks.

And a true Keto diet is just low in carbs like no carbs. Protein and fat ratios are not that important but you do need lots of fat.
